5 Ghz is a wireless radio frequency that can not go through walls. Also, water will absorb wireless signals. If neither of these things are affecting you, you will want to be sure your notebook has 802.11a option, not all computers do. I know my laptops have 802.11b/g, but no A. The A band again doesn't go through walls, it's used more in point to point applications, bridging, etc. If that doesn't help, I didn't find any information on your laptop, update the case and I'll look further at it with you.
