Sony online support says 'no' vaio is 64-bit Windows Vista compatible.
But i couldn't get the answer whether any vaio (SZ6xx, TZ, etc..) is 64-bit WIndows XP compatible.

Do i need different drivers for the 32 and 64 bit versions of the same OS?

All new notebooks should be 64-bit compatible. But nevertheless, the problem is, as you mentioned, drivers. It could be that Sony does not produce any of those drivers at all.

And yes, you need different drivers for 32-bit and 64-bit.

Any notebook with a Core 2 Duo is 64-bit compatible. Core Duos' aren't.

In a practical sense, how do 64 and 32 bit differ?

Yes that's true, core 2 duos are 64-bit, core duos aren't. But Sony does offer Core 2 duos, so there should be some vaios that are 64-bit.

In a practical sense, 64-bit offers more memory as in RAM memory not storage memory, more data processed by the CPU at each CPU cycle, and maybe one or two more advantage over 32-bit. It is all about whether the hardware supports 64-bit or not, as usually if the hardware supports 64-bit then it will support 32-bit. Not vice versa though.

I have a vaio VGN-SZ791N . I need xp x64 (64bit) or Vista 64 bits so my laptop can reconise 4 gb RAM. As this laptop comes with 32 bits OS it wont be able to reconize and use 4 gb RAM .
But as sony vaio sucks SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS VAIO SUCKS VAIO SUCKS.
SONY VAIO SUCKS . DONT BUY VAIO PRODUCTS!!!! They seelll things that cant be used . They refuse to provide drivers for my laptop . They sold me a laptop with 4 gbs RAM but 4gb RAM cant be used because it needs a 64 bit O.S to do so but i repeat they refuse providing it!! So lets STOP BUYING PRODUCTS from them !!!! THERE ARE MANY people with the same PROBLEM so lets get all together and tell everybody on the internet. DONT BUY PRODUCTS WHICH CANT BE USED FULLY . I REPEAT VAIO SUCKS.

Guido - all you had to do is a little research before you bought - EVERY computer mfg'er in the WORLD sells 32-bit PC's with 4gbs of ram - not just Sony. However, I agree that Sony is lagging in 64-bit driver support when compared to Dell & HP. There are plenty of threads here on how to do this, but you are going to have to work at it!
