They did. They must have made a typo with the hybrid hard drive, where the 160GB hybrid is cheaper than the 120GB regular :p.

Whatever...I am actually after the 200GB 7200RPM HD and that price remains the same.

the carbon WEAVE finish on the 791 is different than the 780... it looks like plastic, but all models above 740 are made of carbon fiber... the 791 is all appearance.

Hi, im about to buy the VGN-SZ780 within a week in Canada, is this laptop any good? Quality wise etc.. I was orignally comparing it to the Thinkpad T61 which had double the performance for less the price. Thanks!!

There is no doubt in sony vaio's quality. I currently own a SZ650, and it had no quality issues, none. In fact, the quality is so much better than the Dell XPS m1330 I've returned . Nonetheless, keep in mind that some SZ users have reported quality issues with SZ6 series. Here are the 2 known issues reported:
    1. LED bl screen light leakage and brown bands
    2. Fan noises (rare)

Note that these issues were reported on the SZ6 series, so I'm not sure whether sony had fixed them for the SZ7 series.

My SZ650 does not have any of these problems so I am very happy with my purchase at this point, therefore I would strongly recommand the SZ series. :)

I have Vaio Sz680 and thinkpad X61s. I dont know why I feel the thinkpad is 2 times faster than Vaio....

Vaio has more memory and faster hard drive.
Thinkpad has slower processor but has double the cache than Vaio (L7500 vs T7250).

Thinkpad seems to be more responsiveness.....
Vaio in stamina mode and performance set in power manager (just for the compare). X61s set to performance mode too.

Thinkpad has L7500, 1.5Gb ram, 120GB hdd, Vista business <> Sz680 has T7250,4Gb ram, Vista Business X64. I know they are not on the same OS, but in my measurements the 64bit Vista is faster than 32bit Vista. In spite of these the thinkpad seems faster..

I'll make some measurements, because this is not seems normal...

Vaio power management sometimes hinders the laptop to have max performance. For example, you will see a performance difference if you switch from "vaio optimized" power plan to "high performance" (both while using the AC adapter).

Let me explain it: I often look into the Event log. My computer>>Rightclikk>>Manage this last 2 seconds on x61s and lasts 5 seconds on Vaio. It is more than I can wait...

Even viewer (system) start last 2 seconds on x61s, and 5-10s on Vaio. I dont know why!
The hard drive indicator shows continous hard drive activity till the Event log appear...

I have Samsung HM250JI (250GB) (Performance index 5.3) in the Vaio and Seagate Momentus 120GB in the X61s (5.1 Pref.Index). I think the Vaio has faster hard drive.

I'll make tests without any power management drivers installed.
Just the needed device and chipset drivers on both of computers on the same OS...

    Can you recommend some testprogram?

I see. Well, try to do the same task with the power plan set to "high performance" on your VAIO. I noticed the difference in performance when I played Warcraft3 on my SZ. If I set the power plan to high performance, I usually load faster before every game.

If you want to do some benchmarking tests on both laptops, here are some of the programs you can use.

    Computer Information/Benchmarking:
    ATTO http://kb.ciprico.com/lore/article.php?id=268

    Hd Tach http://www.simplisoftware.com/Public/index.php?request=HdTach
    PC Wizard http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php
    HD Tune http://www.hdtune.com/
    SpeedFan http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

These programs should help you to identify and test major hardware components of your laptop.

I hope this helps, good luck

I purchased my SZ780NW (NW meaning built in Sprint wireless card) couple of weeks ago from Portable One. It is a great computer with plenty of speed, hard drive capacity and looks great! You will make a fine choice as others on this forum had done. Buying from P1 guarantees your unit will arrive with no bloatware.

Sorry for the delay amigo, been having some issues unrelated to my sz780. I am running a 2.4GHZ, 2GB of RAM with 2GB coming even though 32bit only recognizes 3MB or slightly more, have 7200RPM 160GB drive. Computer runs fine, no issues, light and fast, much better than Thinkpad and Dell. You probably already have your mean machine. Let me know how you like it. I am wanting to put a 128GB SSD, but the price keeps me away for now if you know what I mean.

Can you please expand on that a bit? I'm torn between the m1330 and an SZ laptop.

    Thanks!
