i may have stumbled into the wrong section here as im no computing guru but i was thinking of slashing out on a sony sr19xn. Does it have any advantages over say the samsung Q310 or is it overpriced for nothing? What else is there in the portable, powerful corner of the market? I do like bit of style aswell

I think, when it comes to Sony, you are definitely paying for the brand and for the design/style quite a bit...
Its like this with most of the big brands...

With Sony, you are paying extra simply for coolness.

Seriously, you are also paying for great design and quality too, to an extent, at least better quality than a Dell or HP, in my experiences with all 3 brands.

I went with Sony because they simply packed the most amount of power into the most portable laptop I could find.
(Centrino 2, graphics switching, small, light weight)

If you're not worried about portability or care a huge amount about style, there are far better options.

You will pay a premium for ANY Sony product because of the following:

    1) Sony brand name
    2) Style factor
    3) Build Quality (usually better than most especially in laptops but not equal across all electronic devices)

However what is nice about the SR series is that they introduced it at a lower price point and also have a fantastic back to school sale on it. I was able to configure my SR similarly to the Dell XPS M1330 i returned (however the Sony has the newer Centrino 2 processors) and with slower hard drive (5400 vs. 7200) and after the $150 rebate from applying/using the Sony Style card, it only ended up being $80 more than the XPS which had a 30% coupon applied for a config over 1600.
