Or remove completely. Some of them don't even have descriptions, but bluetooth for instance I don't use, I could stop those three? Then that would leave only EIGHTY. There are so many processes running, almost all of them say 00- but I take it that doesn't mean they are not using the processor & more to my concern heating up my notebook?

Is there a list of processes somewhere I could safely stop on a vaio? For someone who is not up to the task of clean install (I read the sticky), I'm just wondering if there's anything else that could make a difference before I accept a restocking fee.

    Thanks.

It would be helpful if you posted what laptop you own and list the processes that you can see.

If they show 0 cpu use then they are not executing at all and in no way contributing to "heating up" your notebook. Eighty processes is not a large number at all. It is pretty typical. Why are you concerned with this number? And why are you looking at having to "accept a restocking fee"?

Thanks for the link, that looks exactly like what I'm asking for. Unfortunately it's a little wasted on me because I don't understand the first note- what using "services.msc" instead of "msconfig" in the runbox means. I.D.K. why I thought it would be as simple as clicking end process or removing programs. They did tell me to first update windows, which I hadn't even done yet. So maybe that will help. Thanks again.

Yes, thank you. It's an S.R. And I'll list the processes below, though most of them do say "00" under C.P.U. I now understand that since I have the old technology higher wattage processor in a small case to expect some heat, but my first even older (~5 years) Sony 13.3" never even got the slightest bit warm. So it was somewhat of a surprise to get hot with just one internet window open, or just typing. I might be better off sticking to the slowest processors & hard drives inside the largest notebook cases, a strategy that has worked well for me so far. I just couldn't pass on getting a small vaio again, with the promotional deals etc.

But I think I'll try the undervolt link again before I return it. I had given up on that early when I couldn't get the first program you have to download for undervolting to open.

    Thanks all.

Hmm. Here are the processes I see. What's weird is it says 87 processes at the bottom, but when I type them out it's less than forty, so maybe I'm not seeing them all:

    BluetoothHeadsetProxy.exe*32

Leon: Did you tick the "Show processes from all users"?

No, and thank you for thinking of it, because I never would have realized there would be other users. Clicking that tab did show them all:

That "system idle process" is the only one that has anything more than single digits, and it's in the 80's & 90's. I also found an option to turn your processor down to a percentage of your choosing, but even 10% didn't make a significant difference, so maybe it's not the processor. The heat is only right under my left palm (when I'm typing).

system idle process means how many % of the cpu is unused

you should be worried if the system idle process is really low, but not when it's in the 80s or 90s

To use "Services", type "Services" into the search box in the start menu, then click the one that says "Services".

Well thanks to everyone for taking the time to help, I just couldn't manage to accomplish anything on this front. I have a back-up notebook (for now), & since heat wasn't the only problem with this one anyway, Sears was nice enough to let me return it without penalty. As painful as that was. This was a great deal.

For the future, I'll keep an eye out for a Z series instead. They seem to have more build features in common with my original Vaio than this one did, despite 13.1" instead of 13.3" (less plastic, X-Brite vs. ECO, no left palm hot spot, usable speakers, M.I.J. vs. M.I.C. etc.)!
