hmm ya I noticed the 5 dollar fee on the sonystyle website and was wondering what gives. We have 12% here in BC so that jacks up the price right there.

congrats on purchase, I'm hoping to get a discount or some deal when I got to the sonystyle store and haggle with the dude for a CTO, since he said to come in and order it via him since it gets to him faster (ha nice one) perhaps I'll haggle for a free wireless mouse or some free bluray blanks. hmm

Is the preconfigured one's color powder white? Is powder white the one with the gray/white keys?

Strange. I went to a sonystyle canada today and the guy told me that it's impossible for him to get a cto version in the store and that I would need to go online but then he had no problem telling me that he could order me one of the 4 versions of the preconfigured that was not already present in that store.

By the way, can you get the 100$ rebate, or any other rebate, if you go to a sonystyle store and order one of the 4 versions already available?

Wasn't until now, vista business the only one available on the sony canada site at 1099$, because now it says vista home premium?

I think the color of the $1100 model is white with white keys.

It says that in-store pickup isn't available for the pre-configured models. Yeah Vista Home Premium makes more sense since it's not a business-type laptop.

weird, I was told otherwise. Regardless, the gray one is still apparently not available for preordering in the CTO, it says one of the components is out of stock. So I am waiting myself before getting anything.

I was told the same thing when I went into the store ... the salesman basically couldn't help me and I had to order online. I went online this morning to see what the sonystyle.ca site was doing (as everyday there seems to be a new glitch with it). So today, the same system I configured on it yesterday is now $204 MORE today  . WTF is going there? When I talked to some clown on the phone the other day he tried to tell me that the white laptop had black keys.

.... losing confidence in my choice of Sony ...............

same, the site has been giving me a different price each day. This is why I am stalling and not getting anything yet. 2 days ago I had speced it up and it came out to 1529 with no tax, now its at 1733. Not sure what is going on, but maybe glitch on website or just wrong pricing before?

regardless, the CTOs are meant to ship in mid august I believe, if you order today, so my best bet is to order end of august or early september when any glitches will be worked out hopefully. If not I will call in and order it that way.

Honestly, I think that the pre-configured models offer a better value than the CTOs especially because they're cheaper to begin with and you can also get $100 off on every laptop and free shipping.

Just got a call back from sonystyle.ca as I had called them the other day. He said the price is higher because the website wasn't calculating in the hi-color screen and something else (the base price was lower yesterday but is apparently correct today in the higher amount, of course).

Anyways, I told him the price was a little high so I was going to wait. He said that there is a promotion/discount that will be coming out next week on the website for the CTO. So, I guess I'll wait and see what that amounts to ....

none of the pre-configs come with hi color screens according to the specs on the site, it would say xbrite hi-color in the specs but it just says xbrite tech (check the LT series it mentions hi color there in the specs though). Plus the highest model comes with 4 gig of ram, I'd rather get 3 and use the 100 bucks on the hi color screen. Plus I will be removing the video premium thing saving me $170, I have no need for Video Premium Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 nor even adobe elements. :/ but you can't remove that latter one.

well there is the 50 dollar discount if you trade in your old vaio (if I had one...) but hopefully it will be a better deal than just 50 bucks.

Okay, i get what you're saying. Yeah the 50 dollar trade-in discount is a joke. My current laptop is still worth $700, why would I trade it in for 50 bucks?

Hmmm, Sony just called me back again and said they would honor the price I came up with yesterday on the website ($1479).

I don't think any of the pre configs on sonystyle or anywhere else in store, like best buy and future shop come with the hi color screen, hi color is only an addon in the CTO I believe.

the only difference between the 160 and 140, the 160 has 1 gig of extra ram, blu ray drive (read only) and that costs you all 250 extra.

here is the thing, if you are going to use only a 32bit OS, and not opt for 64bit, then you don't need more than 3 gigs of ram. If you won't be using blu ray at all, then the 160D is no worth the money and the 140D is just fine.
