I have a sony vaio sz230 laptop with a nvidia geforce go 7400 graphics card and has only a VGA output. I purchased VGA to Component Cables and plugged the VGA into the computer and the red, blue, green cables into my sylvania HDTV, I put the TV to the correct video input but nothing happens when i try to display my laptop sceen on the TV. how can I resolve this issue?

Component Video is Y-Pr-Pb encoded video which is different than non-encoded RGB and RGB/HV. The Device to which the "VGA" connector is connected, needs to support Component video (Y-Pr-Pb) for this type of cable to work. This is common for projectors. Some other displays also support Y-Pr-Pb through the HD15 (VGA) connector. Check your Plasma, Projector or HDTV manual, otherwise your picture will be extremely ugly and possibly won't have sync!

You might need a VGA -> component video adapter. The VGA connector uses horizontal and vertical sync pins along with the red, green, and blue....whereas your TV is looking for the sync signal on the Y (or green).....yada yada yada...point is it wont work with just the breakout cable as you have. I havent looked at who makes the converters lately, but we used to use one made my Audio Authority. It was about $120 back then...im sure you can find something similar for less money. Good luck....this was one thing that making me lean towards getting the Asus US6....it has HDMI....but for the rare occasions I would actually use it, it didnt justify the comparably poor battery performance vs. the Sony notebooks....so I am now deciding if I want SZ or TZ. :)

My Olevia has VGA_Component, it needs something like that, if the TV does not support it then you would need to get a VGA to VGA
