Trying to help a friend. He has a VAIO S2XP PCG 6D1M. Was running XP and after formatting the D:\ partition to install Ubunto, and restarting with the installation disk in, the screen started staying grey (i.e., low level illumination) when the laptop was shut down & switched off. The screen now stays grey all the time when the laptop is off, either on battery alone or when attached to the AC adapter. Removing the battery and unplugging the AC adapter shuts down the laptop completely (black screen), but when plugged in or battery reinstalled, the screen lights up dimly grey. This happens no matter which OS he was in before shutdown. He confirms he is shutting down and not going to sleep or hibernate. This happens whether he shuts down from the OS, or holds down the power button to force a shutdown. Selecting "Load BIOS Setup Defaults" has no effect.

    Any ideas?

Ok, you can cancel the call... turns out it was a hardware problem.
