Hi! I'm wondering why you tried 10.04 rather than 10.10? I tried Ubuntu 10.04 on my F115 and found myself always booting to Win 7 due to sound not working and the nvidia proprietary driver not working. However with 10.10 I've found everything working (other than screen brightness). Also, I've had to stay with the 256.53 nvidia driver since the update won't work with X.
Other than not updating to the newest nvidia driver, I've had great success with 10.10. If you're definitely not going to try Ubuntu, it would help to give your background with Linux. Are you familiar with setting up things, or would you rather have a friendly to use OS?
If you're motivated, I would suggest Arch, Gentoo or FreeBSD (I know, not Linux, but since we're talking *nix, why not).*
If you're looking for a more friendly approach, Fedora is usually good (sometimes hit or miss), and I've heard good things about Mint.
*note, I'm pretty sure none of these "more motivated" distros/OS come with X installed, so you would be starting off from the command line.
linux edition
