    Hi!
I have tried suse, ubuntu, kubuntu and mandriva but i cant get any of these to install! I think its something to do with the SATA hard disk. My question is, has anyone with an s5 series (i personally have a s570p) managed to get linux running on it? What variety are you using?

I´m planning to install Ubuntu or maybe Gentoo on a VAIO S580M notebook. This can be done if you search a little bit in Google, for example:
    http://tuxmobil.org/sony.html
    http://biomech.iet.unipi.it/Members/raphael/vaio/vaio_s5m_config

I don´t have any SATA drive PC yet (except my VAIO laptop), but this is since long time back covered by any Linux distribution, Can you detail a little bit what kind of problem do you have?, does the instalation process start?, do you reach the Hard disk partition step?

    hi,

ive got a viao s5xp bought in the UK so not sure how that maps to US serial numbers.

am also looking to install a linux on it. Have tried a few aswell including suse. The problems i get sometimes involve the network adapter. Have read a few things about this and apparently -noapic can sort thi but haven't tried it yet.

Has anyone got any closer to installing yet?

I did not install linux but I tried knoppix.

At first it did not work. But when I disabled the pcmcia adapter, it worked like a charm. In ten minutes time I was browsing the web using firefox wirelessly.

So considering this, I think linux will work fine.
