my sony SZ does the connect/disconnect sound every hour or so. Is there any program that can log the hardware that is connected/disconnected?

Oh great, someone who also noticed the problem. My original thread got no response: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=183994
I installed eval version of USBTrace http://www.sysnucleus.com/usbtrace_download.html and logged the plugin events. Turns out to be the UPEK fingerprint chip randomly resetting itself. Took everything apart and reseated all FPC cables but doesn't seem to be a connection issue. -
did you try reinstalling the drivers?

Driver and chip works fine except for the resets, so I feel there's no need to reinstall. It's not as if some file got corrupted.
Being a HW engineer, my guess would be that the FW of the UPEK chip locks up once in a while and triggered its watchdog timer which then reset the whole chip. Resetting the chip would initiate a USB unplug/plugin event, which is why you're hearing the sound.
But I could be wrong of course.
log hardware connected/disconected?
