One of Microsoft's recent updates is messing up my VAIO VGN-FS550. My computer won't boot. I get an lsass.exe error "the application failed to initialize". When I try and boot from my emergency recovery disc's the computer turns itself off before it will finish loading. I thought it might be sasser but it can't be.

I destroyed both partitions and installed Linux. Computer works fine. At this point I can boot from my emergency recovery discs and reload both partitions. I flash the BIOS and have a clean system. Until I install the Windows updates, and then it all starts over again. It started happening a couple of weeks ago and I have reloaded Linux and then Windows several times (at a couple hours a pop) to narrow it down to a windows update problem.

Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Yea, I'm getting the same error message as that other guy. Sounds like we have basically the same problem. Guess I'm going to have to install one update at a time to find out which one it is.

does the error show up in event viewer? i don't see it

i have the same symptoms but the error message isn't displayed. sometimes before getting a black screen a small box will pop up then immediately dissapear before the black screen occurs.

when this black screen is on the computer appears to be in hibernation mode. but i can't wake it up. power buttons do nothing (only the power-on light is displayed when pressed and dissapears when unpressed). i had to resort to pulling the plug.

this only occurs at a rate of 1/10 times.

more importantly this occured after a microsoft update. after i boght the comp i immediately downloaded all the critical updates using the manual update option in the start menu. the moment microsoft prompted for a reboot i started getting this condition. the update was performed around 3 weeks ago a couple of days after the purchase

Recent crashes and such, blue screens, the above lsass.exe error. Looked as per above at viral content, updates, etc. Turned out to be a bad memory module! Check your RAM.

Google the keywords of your problem. Over my years of computing I have found that I'm usually not alone when disaster strikes.
