are there any drawbacks to leaving an empty xd/sd/mmc memory card adapter in the slot at all times? stuff like power drain, hardware issues, etc...

No there arent. I put mine in the first day I got it and havent taken it out.

Definitely no hardware issues but it might drain battery - minimal though.

Speaking of which, how do you put the memory adapter into the slot? The cover over/or in? the slot refuses to open, even when I push it in.

The notebook comes with a bay cover which you have to push in for it to pop out. Then you stick the adapter into the slot.

Is there any place to buy/get a replacement slot cover? The one I'm considering doesn't have it (the original purchaser did the same as Aero), but I don't like the idea of wasting any battery life, regardless of how minimal.

I checked Sony's site(s), but there was nothing there.
