is there any downside to raising this value for the minimum processor state in the advanced power options for when my SZ is plugged in besides a slightly higher electricity bill?

i would be interested in that too, because my SZ's fan is always in on.

Don't think there is a downside, besides more heat being produced and your components running hotter all the time (but if you have the laptop in a well ventilated area, it should not be an issue). Personally, I don't think it is worth it to set the minimum value too high, but then I rarely use my laptop plugged in.

BorjaZD: Under Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings, click the VAIO Power Management tab, you can change the CPU Fan Speed. I leave it on Adaptive and that works fine for me (and is probably best for your hardware in the long run too).

    BorjaZD,

Sorry for the extremely late reply! Just been busy...

Anyway, I'm pretty sure the only way that your fan working constantly can be normal is if your processor is running hot enough (continuously). This can be because of:

    1) Your ambient temperature (room temperature) is quite high (for example, my laptop's temperatures are higher during summer than in winter)
    2) Your CPU is constantly in use (for example, you are running processor-intensive applications).

To confirm whether the above are the reason for your fan running continuously, download a program called Notebook Hardware Control from http://www.pbus-167.com/

This program will let you monitor your CPU temperature, as well as hard drive temperature (amongst many other things). My CPU temperature is usually around 38-40 degrees celcius and my fan usually is NOT on at this temperature (if it is, it is on at a very slow speed and is barely audible).

    Good luck!
