FZ190E owner here. I’ve had this machine for over a year and the powder coating on the mouse pad is flaking off. At first it was small but now it’s about 25% gone and is only getting worse. Anyone else have this problem? What did you do about it?

Is this something I can get Sony to fix?

do you mean touchpad? you think it has anything to do with how hot your laptop is running?

hmm that's odd. I'd really like to see a picture of it. Maybe you could post one.

I don't think I've ever seen or heard of that

    Here's a picture, as requested:

Note the powder coating on my touchpad is wearing in two places (1) vertically on the right edge (where I do vertical scrolling) and (2) the center. And this is unrelated to the heat problem.

do u have rough and/or dry fingers? they're more abrasive like that. i recommend lubrication with your favorite lotion before more finger activities with your laptop.

How can you be so sure it is not related to the heat?

LOL. I'm not a lumberjack or anything, and I don’t have hands made of sandpaper....any calluses I do have is strictly the result of habitually masturbating (just kidding….about the calluses, not the masturbation).

Seriously though, I do notice my fingernails sometimes scratch the touchpad…but I assume everyone does this and the coating shouldn't flake off the way it has.

Is there a way for me to get Sony to fix this?

P.S. The heat problem is a relatively recent phenomenon whereas the touchpad’s coating began flaking off way earlier, so we can safely rule out heat as the cause.

it's prolly combo of heat, dry fingers and cheap sony parts. i doubt sony will do anything about touchpad. i bet they'll point the finger at normal wear and tear. and have you opened up your compartments yet and used compressed air to blow out your laptop?

It's probably is a combination like the other guy said.
If it continues I would prolly leave it alone cause it may come off completely and look fine. Maybe

I think the issue is the fingernails. He stated the heat issue is new. The touchpads are NOT designed to be touched by the nails part of your finger. That is sure to wear it out as nails are quite tough.

UPDATE: I called Sony support and the representative told me if I ship my VIAO for repair, a technician will look at the touchpad to determine if it’s a manufacturing error or ‘user wear’. If it’s the former Sony repairs it for free. Well, I have a feeling whoever examines this touchpad is simply going to say ‘user wear’ and I’ll be SOL.

At first the representative told me I would be shipping my laptop to a service center….then at the very end he told me I’m getting on-site service and a technician will be coming to my house. I was confused but oh well I wasn’t about to argue with free on-site service (apparently covered by my warranty--which I didn’t know I had nor ever bothered to read).

What’s on-site service like, are they difficult to deal with? You guys have seen my laptop…. what should I expect?

P.S. the more I think about it....will an on site tech even have a spare "touchpad"? It sounds like something only the factory can fix.

i had a teacher in HS with a vaio and his suffered from the same symptoms. i think its just wear and tear and the design sony used on some touchpads.
i assume other manufacturers have same issues with some models.

Update #2: The onsite-service tech just left my home. The touchpad was replaced with no questions asked and now feels and operates at 110%.
Actually, there is a stark difference in responsiveness from the older touchpad….I now realize how much functionality I'd lost and was forced to live with for so long. It feels brand new again.

However, I’m now left with another problem; I just discovered a very tiny screw on the floor, which the tech missed and didn’t replace. So, this screw obviously belongs somewhere in my laptop….will this missing screw cause problems down the road?

Should I go through the trouble of unscrewing my laptop, search the innards for where it belongs or is it a non-issue and not bother?

I'd call and ask to specifcially talk to the service rep who came to your house. Ask if he dropped a screw while doing the work. He most likely did and could not find it and used a spare from his kit.
