No matter what power plan it's on, when I run my VAIO F on battery, the performance takes a massive hit. I can't watch HD videos without them skipping, load times for everything takes double the time it usually does, etc. Why is this and what settings can I tinker with to fix it?

I don't have that specific model, but can you disable Intel's speed-step in the BIOS (the thing that allows the CPU to adapt its speed to the power available)? What about customizing your power profile with all settings set to HIGH?

If you disable SpeedStep, the CPU will be locked at the lowest performance mode.

On my FW in the battery options I am able to specify the level of performance on battery and plugged in, and by default it is set to a lower level on battery to conserve power but I can up to to high performance but the battery takes a massive hit. I am sure this can be changed as well on your F series.

Yup, everything was already set to high performance, at least on all the settings I can see under the Advanced Power Settings... Is there anywhere else to look for settings that could possibly effect the performance?

From what I've read on other forums there is a hard-defined CPU throttling when switching to battery, probably on the BIOS level. There is nothing that can be done.

Considering the massive 150W power supply that comes with it, it does make sense to slow down the machine otherwise the 54W battery just can't supply enough energy, and from what I know about accumulators any attempt to regularly subject it to potential 200% load would set the course to its quick failure.

Try different media players - some use more resources than others. Also, turn off all other programs that might be using the HDD (might not be applicable if you have an SSD). Stuff like file indexing, VAIO PMB browser, antivirus, etc. as the other requests to the HDD will interfere with the playback.

I have an F23. I don't have the same problem you have. I can game on my laptop when it's on battery, and though I've got maybe an hour from full battery to nothing, Starcraft 2 and Mass Effect 2 both seem to run just fine off battery. I'm puzzled. Which F do you have?

I have a vaio f12 and my CPU clocks down when on battery to 933 Mhz - even in performance mode. I searched on google and i found a tool which fixes the downclocking: Throttlestop. Now the CPU uses it's full clock on battery. (You only need to run the tool and close to tray) :)
