have sony vgn-a270 laptop, running xp. it was working fine last week now upon boot up get "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device & press any key"

logged into setup and checked boot order and its correct. reset the default values in setup and rebooted and still get same problem.

also inserted a win98se cd into to cd/dvd player and was able to access the cd drive. also was able to get to a dos prompt and could not get to the c: drive/HD.

after checking internet, it sounds as though the HD, the motherboard or there might be a ram problem.

Can anyone help? My daughter claims she doesn't have the sony recovery disk and i can't figure out what to do. Is there anything i can do? if i have to replace the HD can someone assist me in removing the bottom panel of the laptop.

I've gone to sony and they only have a users manual for my laptop and that doesn't show instructions for back panel removal.
