so here is the situation. i ordered a sony vaio z540 on wednesday and decided about a day later that i wanted a 250gig HD instead of 160. i called up sony and they said they'd have to cancel the old order and reconfigure a new one. i was fine with that.

fast forward a few days and part of the original order (the neoprene case) has shipped and the other part (the notebook itself) still says "processing". basically, am i going to get stuck paying to ship back this stuff even though sony assured me the original order was canceled?

That sounds bad - maybe you should also kindly complain about that along the way.
