I've returned to the Sony Vaio fold after using a ThinkPad for a number of years and I've got some questions regarding the VGN-BX760 (VGN-BX760PS4) that I just purchased and which is still new in the box.

1/ RAM that is included in this laptop is 1GB DDR-SDRAM. From what I've heard this laptop has two slots, one of which is easy to get to. Does anyone know if the easy to get to slot is empty in this configuration? If yes, I would like to add a 2GB module which will give me a total of 3GB.

2/ I've purchased memory from Crucial with good results and I believe that the following module is appropriate for this laptop:

Does anyone have good experience with other vendors who may be more price competitive?

3/ I would like to upgrade to Windows 7: do you think that this laptop with the 3GB of RAM will be sufficient???

Many thanks in advance for any/all feedback and it is good to be getting reacquainted with Sony's very special display screens!

    Cheers,
    David

Sorry I couldn't find your exact specs in a Sony site to help verify answers for your questions but

    1. If your notebook states it can have 3GB RAM then just make sure is compatible with the notebook. Installing is fairly easy, maybe is scary for the first time as you need to place it nicely and give it alittle push for it to "clip" in. It looks fragile so the push sounds scary lol :)

    2. Feature: DDR2 PC2-5300, You stated you have a DDR not a DDR2. Sorry but I search on goggle on your model but it gave me non Sony sites to have an accurate detail spec. Im sure someone would drop by to help verify for you

    3. 3GB might not be. Firstly you need min 1GB and a graphics card which can handle Direct 10x. If you have these then you should be able too as it also have Win7 XP-mode which is like Win7 but for those who don't meet the full requirements (don't quote me on this, I read it once or twice, so I'm not 100% sure), but there is a downfall to having it in XP-Mode as you got to have VT enable and another extra 1GB to fullfill this requirement

Or just go to windows website and click Win7 in the product list and find the link for Win7 requirements and what you need to have before installing. It should be easy to fine since it always all over the place :) Good luck

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/system-requirements.aspx <-- Win7 upgrade system requirement. Check on a free upgrade if your notebook comes with vista, there are some requirements thou and I haven't read it so I can't help you out on that - Good luck

Moofo, thanks for the feedback! Here are the specs of this machine:

    Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7100, 1.8GHz
    Front Side Bus Speed: 800MHz
    L2 Cache: 2MB
    Memory (Type: DDR2): 1GB (Installed), 4GB (Maximum)
    Memory Speed: Speed: 667MHz
    Hard Drive Capacity: 80GB (Speed=5400rpm)
Graphics Processor: Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

I mentioned increasing the RAM to 3GB because I was hoping to install a 2GM module in the easy to access slot and I believe that the existing RAM should be 1GB, yielding a total of 3GB. Perhaps I will also be able to add a 2GB module in the hard to access slot BUT I have yet to locate a tutorial...

I've installed memory before so I can appreciate the anxiousness that comes with the snapping a RAM module in place!

I checked the Win 7 site and it looks like once I upgrade the RAM that OS should run on this laptop. That said, I'd still like to get a "go for it" from someone that is running a similar configuration...perhaps once I've upgraded I'll post to a broader audience.

    Cheers!
