I've reformatted and reinstalled various laptops for myself, friends, and family, but this particular model has me a bit stymied.
I admit having jumped the gun in reformatting the thing (including the recovery partition) before making the recovery disc(s), but I've downloaded all the applications and drivers from esupport.sony.com and installed them. Everything ran without a hitch except for the Sony Programmable I/O Control Device Driver and the ALPS Touchpad driver, both of which claimed that they weren't intended for my machine.
Further, despite installing the Sony Notebook Utilities, I can't seem to find the Event Service or any of the other Sony utilities. Are shortcuts to these utilities created in the start menu or control panel?
Any help is appreciated. If I need some of the files from the recovery DVD, would anybody be kind enough to upload them to me? Thanks in advance.

Well, after 16+ hours of searching and all nighters, I managed to install the Alps Pointing Device Touchpad ALDOTH-00199336-US.EXE 5.3.511.2c (keywords for future troubleshooters).
First I downloaded the file from Sony's support site http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNS580&upd_id=1647&os_id=7
"This update is not intended for use with your computer model."
To bypass the OS/Model check, I had to extract the files inside the .exe
It turned out to be a WISE installer, and so I had to find a WISE extractor
Enter e_wise http://www-user.tu-cottbus.de/~kannegv/programm/e_wise.arj
It's operated by a command prompt, usage is directory-of-and-the-program-e_wise_w.exe the-WISE-.exe the-destination-for-extraction
Example: C:\e_wise\e_wise_w.exe C:\Drivers\ALDOTH-00199336-US.EXE C:\Drivers\Alps
After extracting the files, I went in circles when trying to install the driver
SOLUTION
It turned out that the success was through Start -> Control Panel -> Mouse -> Hardware Tab -> Properties -> Drivers Tab -> Update Driver -> Install from a list or a specific location (Advanced) -> Search for the best driver in these locations -> Uncheck Search removeable media -> Check Include this location in the search -> Enter the directory of the extracted drivers -> Browse -> Next
In short, update your current touchpad (it might not be named a touchpad) driver by pointing out the extracted folder.
The reason for the 16+ hours of troubleshooting was because I was using my Logitech mouse the moment I first got the laptop, so make sure you detach any external pointing devices before updating!
Here is the extracted Alps driver for your convenience http://ihud.com/file.php?file=231205/1135335149/5.3.511.2c.zip
As for the Sony Programmable I/O Control Device Driver, a Google search can infer that it's for non-Windows OSes such as Linux, and since I can use my Fn keys and S key fine, I'm not going to worry about it.
You can configure your S keys by C:\Program Files\Sony\Setting Utility Series\VCCSpecialButton.exe
After installing the new driver, the vertical/horizontal scrolling feature will be restored
To other owners of the VGN-S580, would you altruistically upload your recovery CD or programs like VAIO Zone or VAIO control center to us format-happy users? -
Awesome, thanks for the post. The touchpad driver works well (I've been using an old HP driver for the last little while) and I'm happily ignoring the I/O driver. My S1 and 2 buttons, however, still elude me; inside the Setting Utility Series folder, all I see is a Version.txt. I have of course tried reinstalling this said driver, but to no avail. Any other suggestions?
Thanks again for your post, Drant. -
Download this http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNS580&upd_id=1974&os_id=7 and this http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNS580&upd_id=1775&os_id=7
If that doesn't work, extract this folder http://ihud.com/file.php?file=251205/1135472875/Setting Utility Series.zip C:\Program Files\Sony -
have you guys followed the guidelines and instructions that sony offers about fresh installations? (on the vaio support page..)

http://www.vaio-link.com/downloads/...5_Utilities.zip&ip=Preinstalled_Utilities.htm
That is the S5 utilities package from the European site but it works just fine on American machines too. -
Drant, your zip archive didn't help me, but I ended up using e-wise to install every component individually and now everything runs perfectly fine. Thanks again for your help - as well as thanks to the other posters!
Edit: Jigar's link includes just about all the original preinstalled utilities; users can also try that...
