I, for one, am a bit disappointed at the new sony lineup. I used to own a Sony SZ, as my "carry everywhere" laptop and I decided it was too heavy, so I replaced it with a eeePC. Unfortunately, the resolution on the eeePC is horrible so I was looking to replace it with another ultraportable. I was hoping that sony would have come out with another TZ-like laptop, but so far, from what I see, the smallest new laptop is the Z, which is IMO, almost exactly like the sz.

    Any opinions?

Its very simple, the TZ, G and UX use lower voltage processors (ULV ultra-low voltage to be exact) than the rest of the lineup.

The lower voltage Montevina processors and chipsets won't be released until September, so expect news on the TZ replacement (and other ultraportables from Sony and other companies) then at the earliest.

The Z is much smaller than the SZ. As I saw it is little bigger from the TZ and much more powerfull of course. Why wait for a replacement of the TZ when you have ready the perfect ultraportable? :)

I agree. I was waiting so long for a Montevina TZ but looking at the Z made me change my mind. I had the chance to play with a TZ of a friend for a couple of days and even if I was impressed from the design, the performance dissapointed me. It was slow even at simple tasks as opening web pages. And he made a clean install of Vista, no bloatware, and the laptop is equipped with SSD and 2 GB RAM.
Well, imo if you have to spend a premium for an ultraportble at least I expect it good. That's why I am leading towards the Z series.

If I could get the Z with the 128GB + BluRay, I would consider it. But it's not an option.

I like my G so I'll wait to see what comes out when the ULV processors are announced.

EDIT: Just give me a G with 128GB SSD and 4GB, and I'm all set ...

I have also considered the new Z model as an alternative to the (new?) TZ or folllow-up of the current TZ that is expected this fall or winter, after ULV Montevina is in the market.

Still, I consider the 0,72 lbs (difference in weight: 3.42 vs. 2.7) and the difference in size, for me, clearly make the difference in favour of the TZ. And the 11,1 inch screen is sufficient in my experience.

But I will add, it would be very interesting if SONY made a 8,9 inch model again, to compete with some other ultra-portables seen these days.

On the basis of the present machines, the TZ is the perfect one for me, size, weight and performance (given my needs) taken in consideration.

Over the years (since the old 505 series), Sony has offered only one model range in that size class... z505, SR, SRX, TR, TZ. Frankly, it's more than a bit soon for them to be dumping the TZ line.

I'm curious if we will see also a more powerful G-version.
    Core2Duo, low-voltage ~1.8Ghz.
I think the current G-version has used similar processors like the TZ

i would love to see a picture of the current TZ sitting on top of a new Z which is sitting on a current SZ, to get a feel of footprint. to me, footprint more important than slight added weight (equal to a couple magazines).

I tend to agree with you, at least far along the way. I think that, also for me, the footprint is of more importance than a FEW 100 grams weight.

One of the genial features of the TZ, is that the size / footprint is the same or even smaller than the former models in the T series, while AT THE SAME TIME the screen size has been enlarged from 8,9 inches to 11,1 inches - an incredible use of the surface area!

For me the size of a 13,3 inches screen laptop simply will be too big to still be considered as a laptop in the "ultra" or "sub" league.
