i've had a tr and about a million mac laptops and none of them are as loud as my sz 160. i've tried the fan thing and the s2 thing and it is still whining all the time. i cant hear myself scream

If that is the case then something is wrong with yours. The sz is normaly very quiet.

hm.. no problems here, but then again, i'm used to my desktop
system whirring all the while. i was very surprised at how quiet
my sz1xp/c is. i am using stamina mode though, perhaps that's
more quiet than the speed mode. and i mainly use max battery
mode, so perhaps the cpu fan isn't as loud as it would be with
    the system in performance mode.

Have you tried manually setting the fan speed to level 1 in VAIO power management?

only sound I can here is the quiet fan in the background when I run it in Speed (nvidea) mode. The DVD drives beeps a tad, but nothing to stress me out.
