a major bios update apeared yesterday. how would i know if i didn't check this site? shouldn't there be a sony update alert like the mac? or even like windows? why arent the updates found automatically? what is the deal with the dowload taxi? why do i need it

At least on recent Sony laptops there is Vaio Update..which should find the updates automatically. Make sure you have it installed and set to find updates automatically. I personally uninstalled it, I would rather check in periodically to find updates rather than to have yet another program running in the background.
I think the idea behind the download taxi is that you can choose the updates you want and download them all at once, instead of one by one. -
Don't bother with the Taxi. Just click on the download link and save it to disk and then run it. Easy as pie.

you know here's the thing. why don't they explain that? where is the viao update thing anyway. its not in the support program i checked that

Go to add/remove programs..it should be listed seperately, verify that you have it installed. How old is your notebook?

i found it but only after doing a google desktop search and then opening a folder with a bunch of unpronounceable .dll files. god i hate windows.

Pretty odd...maybe the 160 doesn't come with it. Did you check your recovery partition or backup discs? When it's on your system, it will show up in add/remove.
ok so how do you upgrade
