Pretty much the only one you really need is the Vaio Event Service, Vaio Notebook Utilities and Vaio Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver. I'm not quite sure what shared library does... I only have these three installed and my computer functions normally, with all FN keys working properly.

It's a library for Vaio apllications.
XGX2007 doesn't need it, well, OK, you know that your computer can work fine without anything installed. But if you install Shared library, Vaio control center, Power management ... you 'll have more options

Vaio Control Center and Power Management are part of the Sony Vaio Notebook Utilities installation. The three listed are the essentials and really nothing more is needed if you want to keep clutter and junk programs to a minimum. ;)

Did you do a fresh installation? I'm a little surprised that these Vaio applications don't need shared library

Every document I have seen from Sony and every successful "clean install" document I have seen here for any VAIO model has said you must have the Sony Shared Library installed as other drivers and apps rely on it.

Concur with Gary - Sony Shared Library according to Sony Win 7 upgrade/clean install: "Required for other Sony applications (Notebook Utilities) to function correctly".

I provided it in my list for the CW clean install, but that was so other users would have no problems in the future if they decided they needed to use the Vaio Apps. But as it stands I don't have Shared Library installed. Could it be transparently installed some other way that I'm not familiar with.. windows update perhaps? But even then I don't show it as an installed update... Consider me interested now, I really want to to know the purpose of this.. Does it serve as a shared dll repository for all Vaio Apps? Even if I didn't install this and just installed the others from a clean install, each app should function independent of one another with no dependencies on the Shared Library, until I install the Shared Library. And if thy're shared components then what's the purpose of that, besides to make the process more complicated?

For my FW model - if you want the function keys to work (volume with OSD, AV mode, Screen brightness with OSD, etc) then you need the Sony Shared Library. That could differ with other models, but know my daughter's C140 laptop required the same for it to work.

At least, the shared library is used to detect your model... sothat the other utilities can use the right function.
I really wonder if Sony shared is already installed in your comp.
Check your folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Sony Shared or C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared if you have 32bit Windows

Without Sony shared library the fn keys won't function (atleast with the older models). Sony shared library (Snyutils.dll) serves as a library for other Sony utilities. But Sony might have changed this with the newer models.

I have CR220E.. I tried to install the Sony Shared Library, but everytime I do it states - "Might not have installed properly.." After I reinstall using recommended settings, it just gives me a windows popup saying "Your update was for vista."

XGX2007, I have to agree with you. I installed the parser and notebook utils and the functions keys work, camera too (after the vista camera driver).

Still makes me wonder how necessary the Shared Library really is..

Isn't it the SFEP (Parser) that takes care of the ACPI functions? The notebook utilities that handle the hotkeys and on-chassis buttons?

Stop wondering. It is necessary. Other drivers and utilities rely on it and without it they won't function properly. The operative word in the warning message is "MIGHT", it does not say "DID".
