Hey guys.... Have a problem, that I think is pretty unique....

I have a Sony Viao Laptop that I bought in 2005. It was working great until about 6 months ago, when for some reason is just stopped turning on.

But yet when I push the power button, Windows come on, and loads, but when Windows are suppose display, the entire computer just turns off!!!

Its SOOOO fdrustrating, because there are times by luck of the draw that the computer will work... so I don't know..

I have spent countless hours searching for solutions but to no avail, does ANYONE have any suggestions for how to fix this problem??

Thank you sooo much for any help!

Hmm. Well, do you have lots of important data on it? If not, you might try a system restore (I think F10 might let you do it - but I'm not too familiar with how older Sony's work). If that doesn't work, you may try re-installing windows altogether either from F10 or from your recovery disk if you were sent one.

nope.. it doesn't get overheated, because it doens't have time, the longest it actually stays on is less than 2 minutes at a time...

And none of the buttons on the keyboard work... I have tried pressing ALL the F buttons but to no aavail, as soon as the initial "windows screen" ends, the screen goes black, and a small error thing pops up and says "operations failed", and then the computer shuts off.....

I would LOVE to wipe everything off and start over, but I don't have any of the start-up discs, and I can't seem to get to a point where I can wipe everything off anyways...

    Thank you for the responses!

When are you pressing the F buttons? F2 should at least bring you to your BIOS. You should be pressing these keys repeatedly as soon as the laptop powers on and preferably before the windows screen (with the little loading bar at the bottom) is shown.

If the above still doesn't work - this may be a long shot - but can you open up your laptop memory compartment and just re-seat the RAM and make sure it's properly in on the off chance that it was knocked loose somehow? If you have any spare memory sticks lying around, it's also worth replacing them to see if it's the RAM causing the problem. It's a relatively simple procedure that's worth a try. That was how I fixed my desktop's booting problem, so maybe we'll get lucky here!

Otherwise, I'm afraid installing from a disk would be your only option. You say that you can occasionally get the laptop to power on. Maybe try your luck until it actually does work and see about making a recovery disk somehow.

You could also try putting a boot disc in the drive and seeing if anything comes up. If so, and the computer stays on for more than a few minutes, it could be a sign that the partition or physical disk has a problem.
