So my hard drive became corrupt (vaio s660b) and i had to reformat my HD. everything went back to normal except my laptop would not recognize any usb device. i thought i might solve the issue by deleting the usb controller driver and reinstalling it...except, i can't seem to reinstall the usb controller.
    my computer->properties->hardware->device manager->usb controller

can anyone please guide me in how to install this driver? it's sort of critical to my everyday usage and i causing me a great deal of stress.
thank you for your help guys.

It is not clear what the state of the system is. After having USB problems, I have had to do the following a couple of times and it worked. Have you done this much:
    ------------------------------
Go to Help and Support Center. Search on USB. Eventually you get instructions like the following:
Did the USB host controller or root hub fail to start?
To determine whether the USB host controller or root hub failed to start
If the Device status box indicates that the device failed to start, try reinstalling the driver for the device.

    Important
Before you remove any drivers, make sure that none of your USB devices are connected to your computer.
To remove and reinstall the driver
    1. In Device Manager, double-click the device category, and then right-click the device whose driver you want to remove and reinstall.
    2. Click Uninstall.
    3. Click OK to confirm the removal.
    4. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes.
[I've also done reboot instead of step 4 and this worked.]
Windows detects your USB host controller or root hub and reinstalls the driver for the device.
Reconnect your USB device directly to the USB port on your computer.

If you have more than one USB device to connect, connect them one at a time and verify that each one works.

Does removing and reinstalling the driver for your USB host controller or root hub solve the problem?
    ---------------------------------
There are other suggestions under the same help. I have never run into the case where the USB driver is really missing.

that's where my problem begins. i had gone through that exact process in the hopes that it would fix my initial usb problem. however, after deleting the driver, and scanning or rebooting, windows prompts me to search for the usb controller to reinstall it. it searches but never finds anything. it claims that it will search through microsoft.com or something, but i believe it is only searching within my HD, where it finds nothing.
so either i find a way to force it to find the driver online (which it doesn't seem to do), or i find the usb controller download somewhere and install it manually. thing is, i can't find the driver anywhere, and my laptop refuses to search for the driver itself, online.

    i'm so lost. lol

Maybe this will help. I checked the driver properties for the USB controllers and hubs for both my SZ and an older Dell desktop (both are Win XP SP2). Most of the files appear to be the same. The time (not date) does differ on a couple of the files. This tends to support the idea that the USB files are part of Windows and not too computer specific. The files that show up under the driver properties are included in the lists below. Maybe this will help you understand what files you are looking for. You could see if these files are on your computer and if not, then find them on another computer or the internet maybe.
