    hi there.

i've been having a big problem with my sony vaio; for some
reason when i do a clean install or semi/complete recovery,
using the soundcard creates a very high cpu load.

well, as i already have a thread providing details on that
    problem
    , i won't create a duplicate here.

instead, i would like anyone with a sz160 or sz1xp system
to share with me the following info:

    - driver provider
    - driver date
    - driver version

    of their sigmatel sound card.

to find this info, go to control panel -> system -> device
manager -> sound, video and game controllers -> sigmatel
high definition audio codec -> right-click this and select
'properties', then go to the 'driver' tab.

    example info would be:

    driver provider: sigmatel
    driver date: 17-nov-05
    driver version: 5.10.4825.0

thanks in advance for your time and replies.

Perhaps Windows Update will help. What did Sony have to say about it?

zazonz, i haven't spoken to sony, though i did post on the vaio club forums.

so far no solution. i may contact sony soon, though i am not a big fan of
    helpdesks.

i will use the recover disks again to do a full recovery and try windows
    update.

thanks sa_ - though it kindof messes up my conclusion that the soundcard
drivers are causing the problem ;)

*update* just noticed that the third option of the recovery utility recreates
the recovery partition - i'm doing that now as it would certainly speed up
    future recoveries =]

thanks for your time and replies. my issue was solved by downgrading
my bios to the only one available from sony - R0062N0.

i had R0063N0, and apparently sony knows there's something wrong
with it as well, as it's not available on their site.

+1 to the sony support team - they suggested i update my bios (sure,
it was a downgrade.. but it was either downgrade the bios or send my
system to them to have it repaired - not an option i'd prefer).

my system actually boots a lot faster now too, from 3+ minutes to un-
der one minute. furthermore, the system is more responsive too.
