I have a new Sony VAIO e series laptop that is a few days old, and i have noticed that the hard drive light is either on or flickering constantly plus i can hear the hard drive working away (shouldn't this be silent?). I went into resource monitor for the disk and attached is a screen shot of what is going on. Should i be taking it back to the shop?

Check the drive for S.M.A.R.T. failures/warnings and do benchmarking to determine it's speed. You can use HDTune for both.
If no Warnings/Failures are shown and the speed is reasonable - I don't think you can return it because the LED is bothering youI notice you have quite hight "Highest Active Time" but it depends on what is going on in the background - Indexing, Paging, Malicious Software scan, Update - many possible reasons and all of them perfectly normal for the first few days of usage of a new system! That's why you need to check your HDD stats first and if they are ok, look for the piece of software that loads it and disable it if you don't need it (I have disabled indexing on mine) or wait until it does its job and calms down.
