Hello everyone. I've been trying to create recovery disks for the new VPCZ1 I got a couple days ago through the VIAO care Recovery and Restore tool. I get two error messages either:

"No installed optical drive is detected on your computer" even though the drive seems to be working fine outside of the recovery tool.

    or

"The disc in the drive is not blank or is not a supported disc type"
even though the computer recognizes the disc as a blank dvd outside of the recovery tool.

I usually get the first error message, then when I hit "back" and click create a recovery disk again, I get the second error message. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Possibly the drive or software doesn't like your specific media? Everything worked first go for me, with verification, using FujiFilm DVD+R Dual Layer 2.4X media. (They're old, I don't burn much these days.)

Sad to say, but I had a similar issue with mine Z11 out of the box; I received the exact same message in the Recovery software. Except that mine won't read ANY disc that's inserted. I confirmed with Tech Support (and Sony's website) that the media I'm using (DVD +R) is a supported media. I tried inserting a movie DVD and nothing happened. Also tried a Music CD - same result. Also can't browse any disc using Windows Explorer. Fortuneately, I have an external optical drive that I used for everything, or I would probably have returned the machine. As a note, the drive motor spins the discs just fine but there's something wrong in the optics.

Eventually, I convinced Tech Support of the obvious: the drive hardware is defective. I have been waiting for a week and 2 days (so far) for on-site support to replace the optical drive (the drive was on "backorder").

Are you absolutely sure the drive can read media?

I think maybe the sensitivity issue of the lens? how about trying a Sony blank dvd+/- R. I got this issue with my sony AW too.

    Sunfox and bryan1988:

I've tried two different brands of blank dvds one one "memorex" and the other "GQ". I'll try to get a blank Sony DVD. Do you think a DL-DVD would work better?

    FrinkTL:

I'm pretty sure the DVD drive works outside of the recovery tool. I've installed Mass Effect 2 and watched a couple movies with it already.

I never used a dual layer disc before. I got this problem on my vaio Aw series. I try to make a recovery but it didnt detect any dvd(Verbatim) in it. I bought the Sony dvd r and it work. I think is the sensitivity of the lens.

Another thing bout sony is there lens are quite sensitive. I sell sony DVD player i got most complain bout the sensitivity of lens that cant play certain disc.

    figured out the problem!

DAEMON TOOLS or some other virtual drive software is running on your computer and it is confusing VAIO CARE as to which drive to use to burn revocery discs

set virtual drive to 0 or remove the software that is creating virtual disks

then insert a BLANK disc while running VAIO CARE... it will say analyzing media then OK

you cannot insert a disc that you have pre-prepared with windows 7 autoplay function that asks you if you want to treat it as a USB drive or a DVD movie or a DVD file storage... this puts some info on the DVD even though you havent copied any info on it and VAIO CARE thinks it is not blank

use a DVD right out of the wrapper and DO NOT click on of the autoplay functions that pop up... just have VAIO CARE running already and you will see it analyze the media and say OK

    good luck!

Try using Clonezilla. The UI isn't the most user friendly (or so it appears... it's just scary-looking, that's all... if you're an advanced user, everything makes sense), but it works really well in my experience.

Heh, this is why creating recovery discs should be the FIRST thing you do! :)

Excellent, thank you! I was using VirtualClone and disabling it worked. (N.B. I didn't have to uninstall; just set the status to disabled. No reboot required even).
