I just got my brand new sony vaio z1 off ebay, eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices
I received it today and saw that the bottom right of the laptop wobbles on a flat surface such as a desk. Upon a closer inspection, I see that plastic on the bottom right is not fully aligned with the aluminum housing while the left side is. the power button also looks like it isn't properly aligned. Also, is the lid supposed to have some kind of curve to it cause when its closed, I can see that the middle is not on the same level as the left and right and is a little higher off the palm rest. How can a brand new laptop have an uneven housing? It was SEALED too!!! Please help, everything else about the laptop is what I expected it to be.

Could you post some pictures?

Here's a few quick pictures I took before work.
Sorry for the bad quality, took with my iphone.

2nd pic shows the left side and the 4th pic shows the right side. -
Sorry, I can't see too much - I can see that the right foot isn't touching your table. Maybe you can try take some photos with your camera's macro mode and it will be clearer.

yea, Ill take some pics when I get home tonight. The seller has agreed to give me a full refund if I am not satisfied but I dont want to wait so long to find another good Z1

Don't worry about the screen curve. I think that's normal.
About the raised foot, did you install the hard disk caddy yourself? What did you mean by the power button doesn't look like it's properly aligned? -
I have not installed the caddy yet, it is arriving in a few days. I received the laptop last night. The right side of the power button has an indent where you can easily place your nail in like it should be moved a little to the right. My samsung digital camera couldnt clearly capture it even with the "super macro" mode.

Just get a full refund...too many defects..
-
Everything is working great, just this uneven right side is annoying, there has got to be something causing it that I can easily fix.
-
Personally, I think you should be able to fix it when you put the hard disk + caddy in. Unless it really seems that the top assembly plate (keyboard, touchpad) is really damaged or bent beyond repair.
-
Did you place your VAIO Z notebook on any other table to check if it still wobbles?
-
It wobbles on any flat surface, other tables, floor, etc....

The ebay seller has agreed to exchange it for me with another brand new z but hes out of the country at the moment and wont return till the 27th. I have to wait a while, he said he could also give me a refund if I don't want to wait.

That's nice of him! In any case, the screen bending and moving is normal, (actually after a while, your screen will become a little warped unless you always open your screen at exactly the middle because it's flexible) -
It is very easy to pull the keyboard off the frame (if you decide you want to keep it, otherwise I don't recommend it). You would then be able to see if it's the lower (plastic) case causing the issue, or if it's actually the keyboard's rigidity holding the corner up.
The "off center" of the housing is a little odd, as I have zero gap all the way around mine. -

This may be just me, but I can't imagine why you would not return it if you paid good money for a "brand new" Z1. Likewise, though the seller has a good eBay rep, I would send it back and get the refund, then order it again after Xmas. 25 days using their formerly new computer just doesn't strike me as a good idea. Good luck either way.

Just an update: Got another brand new one from the seller, everything is fine on this one and I already installed the harddrive caddy. I finally get to use this laptop after initially purchasing it on 11/20/11 lol.

The Z1's alignment is greatly dependent on the keyboard tray which is aluminium. You could have re-adjusted it by flexing the entire chassis or by removing the keyboard and straightening it. I've done this a few times with no ill effects.
Anyhoo, it is probably best you did the exchange -

Congrats on finally getting your rig! It's such a great machine, you'll get service from it for years. I would suggest you consider getting an extended warranty from Square Trade. They have a great rep and you can get a 3 yr ADH wtty from them for around $250. Chances are excellent it will be the best money you ever spent if you plan to keep this and use it and move it around alot. They guarantee that they will repair it and get it back to you within 5 business days or return your full original purchase price. Something to think about, anyway.

I purchased a 2 year plan for 129.99 from squaretrade when I purchased it. They said I cant transfer the warranty to the exchanged laptop so I gotta cancel it since its under 60 days and then purchase it again. I got the standard warranty instead of the accidental damage as I am VERY careful with my gadgets
