I have been having the problem the voltage from the palmrest for months, I got the notebook during the summer for school and started to have problems with voltage leaking through the palmrest and the scanner/mouse pad. When I rest my hands on the palm rest I start to get muscle cramps, nausea, and headaches after about 30 min of use, didnt happen when I dont rest, I confirmed voltage and sent it back to the seller who tried to fix it, was getting around 3 volts at the time, this is after the 3 prong by the way, they did some work on it (tape) and sent it back, they cut the voltage in half but it was still causing the problems. So we got Sony involved and I sent it out to them, get a phone call from the tech saying he cant get a voltage reading after I had tested it before sending it (dc when unplgged and ac when plugged in) so he says he will take it apart and put it back together before sending it back to me... Soooo I get it back and I test it with my meter, yea it still is sending voltage, so now I have no idea what to do, I should be able to rest my **** hands on the palmrest without getting physically ill...I cant keep bring my bluetooth keyboard to class, thats just insane to have to do, any ideas about what I should do now? I love the sz but I cant keep getting sick just trying to use if for note taking, thats what i got it for!

yea they sent that to me first about 2 months ago now i think, it reduced it some but I get voltage when its on battery, I need to run it on that during classes sometimes and I should beable to use it unplugged anyway. sony didnt really say anything about it as far as that goes, they just said they would take it, worked on it and then sent it back, I havent heard from anyone about it.

If these laptops are causing individuals physical harm, why hasn't a class action lawsuit been raised yet?

You might want to start working the return/exchange angle with them. Hopefully they'll work something out with you.

I'm sorry to hear about the troubles your notebook has caused. I understand how frustrating these things can be.

On a lighter note--how about rubber gloves when you're using it LOL.

I never got voltage that I noticed w/ just battery.

Usually when its plugged in and when I physically ground myself (touching feet on ground).

You said they taped it, what do you mean by that?
I was thinking of puting a semi-thick layer of plastic adhesive on the palm rest... but now that sony is shipping me the 3-prong I will see if I still need to do it.

BTW which SZ is it? I have a feeling the ones with metal palm rests are way worse than the plastic ones.

You can also try to put a thin magazine, paper or plastic on your palm rest for now to block out the voltage (instead of another keyboard).

my model is vgnsz250p, they taped up all they could think of inside to prevent the contacts from passing the current, to little success :( i just think its unacceptable to have to put something on the palmrest on a 2k+ notebook, what did I pay all that money for? oh and they did try and suggest that I wear gloves...I didnt like that very much. Has anyone else had any experience with returning or exchanging with sony? I bought the sz in July.

Wow. I was just trying to make light of the situation with a little joke. I'd suggest you see what options they make available to you via exchange. I know elizabex was able to get a few exchanges done.

i think your only option is try and get sony to exchange it. I dont really understand why you are having the problems after the 3 prong connector, and esp. when you are running off battery. Must be something wrong with your laptop that is different from the widespread problem.

what about covering the palm rest with electrical tape? sounds ghetto (and is), but might work in the mean time.

    Ha!

chrisyano is right --- I successfully got Sony to give me TWO exchanges with VAIOs that I was unhappy with, for very finicky reasons that I persistently argued. Despite the reputation of Sony customer service on this board, I definitely can't complain about the end result of all my nagging.

There is a recent thread on this forum about someone who recently got Sony to send them a grounded adapter that apparently solved the charged palmrest issue. I'd suggest looking at that thread, and then taking up a similar strategy.

    Best of luck!

If you really can't exchange it. You should wear an anti static strap. I dunno if it will work as you have a constant current flowing through you. But I wear it when they turn on the heating to max over here.

All my colleagues get shocked by their computer everyday cos of the carpet and the heater is blowing beneath from the carpet which is making it even worse.

it has now been over a week and a half since I sent the email to the Sony rep....not looking good, I am running out of ideas. The authorized dealer I bought it from is deferring everything to Sony now....
