    Hello,

I have a sony vaio K PCG-K215B laptop. Recently I have been having a problem with my dvd rewriter drive. I have tried reinstalling the drivers and the others things that are recommended but it doesn't work. I feel that it is almost definitely a hardware issue. It won't open unless I pin the hole and it doesn't read the cds.

My question is, do I need to specifically get the PCG-K215B model dvd drive or do I have more options, I read about a toshiba one working on someones sony laptop. Also could it be something other then my dvd drive that is the problem, if so are there any guides to opening up the laptop and getting the issue fixed, either
a guide to setting up the dvd drive or a guide to finding an alternative problem if that is the case, finding out what is broken.

Sorry but I am a tech newb, thanks a lot for reading this.

I have a similar problem with a Vaio VGN-SZ330P. Sometimes the dvd/cd drive works fine, sometimes it doesn't recognize that there's anything in the drive at all (with cds that work fine in other computers).

This morning I've been trying to install software from a cd: I'd put the cd in the drive and the drive would think it was empty. In desperation I downloaded a firmware update from the Sony site (the Matsu****a® UJ-842 DVD Writer Optical Drive Firmware Update Utility, specifically for my model of Vaio) and when I rebooted, there wasn't even a cd/dvd drive listed, at all, in My Computer. Help!

OP: Probably a connection issue with the drive to the motherboard.
