my vgn-fs742/w isn't powering up anymore and i was wondering if any one has any clues on how to fix it. my ac adapter light lights up, but my notebook won't turn on when i press the power button. battery works also (put it in my sz to test). i called sony support and told them about my problem. they said it could be motherboard problems and will be $600+ for repair (no warranty). is there any place i could buy just the motherboard for a DIY repair? i recently bought a sz series notebook to replace it but was wondering if it my old notebook can be repaired.

I wouldn't recommend trying to replace the motherboard on your own. If it turns out that something else is the problem, you may have wasted money on one--assuming you can find one.

I'd try to have it looked at and get an estimate from someone before deciding on whether or not to fix your old Sony.

I'd say stick that $600 into a savings account for a future notebook or use it to better your new SZ...usually expensive repairs like that just aren't worth the money.
