hello all . new to this forum but very impressed with the helpfullness of posters. anyway, got the vpccw17fx from best buy. awesome laptop for the money. my problem is that when i go to play a blu ray disc using the intervideo win dvd i am not able to make adjustments to any of the video or audio settings, they are greyed out. i have gone into the nvidia control panel and clicked the radio button to allow the video player to control the settings, but no go. also, if i check the intervideo settings the hardware audio and video settings are greyed out. any ideas ? love this unit btw.

I had the same problem but don't worry, you can fix it.
    1. Uninstall WinDVD BD for VAIO and reboot the computer.
    2. Remove Program Files/Intervideo Directory. Don't do this if you have another program made by Intervideo. If you only have 2 subdirectories under Intervideo Directory (Common and DVDBD8) or something like that, you most likely don't have another program made by Intervideo can safely delete the directories.
    3. Download Universal Extractor from http://legroom.net/software/uniextract#download and install it
    4. Install Full Version of WinDVD BD in the following order (must be in this order)
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNAR290G&upd_id=2762&os_id=28, http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNAR390E&upd_id=3216&os_id=28, http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNFW590&upd_id=5223&os_id=49 . But wait, before you install them, you have to manually extract them with Universal Extractor. To do this, right click on the file and click "Uniextract to subdir". Go to the respective subdirectory and then to tempexefolder (something like that). Double click the executable file in that directory.

That's it. You now have a fresh copy of WinDVD BD that doesn't have Audio and Video Advanced Option Disabled.

Can anybody confirm that het solution posted by Hendra works?
Does this also work on European laptops?

The 3rd download link for WinDVD above no longer works - does anyone have a valid link?

Alternatively, I am just looking to install WinDVD after a clean install of Windows. I have recovery discs but there is no obvious WinDVD folder which I can install from - does anyone know how to install WinDVD from the recovery discs (without doing the full recovery)?

    Thanks,

    Brian

Try this Sony eSupport - VGN-FW490 - Software Updates & Drivers. Then install the updates found for this model.
You need to extract it (as said above) before installing.

Thanks for your reply. Do you know how to extract this file? I have tried the different extraction options in Universal Extractor but each one fails.

    Many thanks,

    Brian

Did you try running the setup without extracting? If Uniextract doesn't work, I don't know of any other software which extracts installer packages, other than 7-Zip.
