dear people,
When i try to play a 1080p movie over hdmi on my tv, it doesn't run smoothly ( i think its called framedrops?)
The videocard is a 9300m GS and since i've got hybrid graphics, a driver update is not possible.
The laptop is a vaio z21wn.
I've tried multiple things (coreAVC, MPC, VLC, etc..) but none seem to give better output.
Are there other solutions to this problem?
thnx in advance.

Z690Y (with 9300m GS) here outputs 1080p through HDMI-to-DVI cable to external display. Runs smoothly. Could the problem be with cable?
I am watching unprotected video (AVCHD from an HD camera). Are you watching something that requires HDCP? -
could be.. i dunno if blurays and HD movies from usenet are HDCP protected..?
But when i look in the nvidia control panel it says my machine is HDCP enabled.. -

Could try the Dox Optimized

hum... when I connect my Z to my 1920x1200 display, I can play two 1080p videos simultaneously without any lags. Given that the 9300 is a weak graphic card, it is still more than powerful enough to handle HD movies.
Maybe your original video file is corrupted? It seems unlikely but I have no other explanation to this.
Edit: Playing HD movies does increase the temperature significantly, maybe your laptop has sucked in too much dust which lead to overheating? -
If you are playing bluray discs, and PROVIDED you did NOT install any random codec pack / graphics drivers, then I would lean towards a hardware fault. Though just to be sure, I would recommend the following:
1. Install a codec pack. The most well known and stable is CCCP. Google it and you shall find. Just make sure you reset and re-register all codecs after completing the install. When it starts up the installer, that will ask to disable any other random codec (if any is present). I would recommend you let CCCP disable whatever it finds during this process.
2. Check if the Graphics Switch is lit (either STAMINA or SPEED). If not, there's your problem; graphics drivers. Install the one from SONY only. If you do have a non-Sony driver, uninstall it first beforehand
3. This is a last-resort step, but factory restore Windows. Or clean install your windows (if you did). And setup the Z with the original Sony drivers only. I strongly advise AGAINST W7 if you don't have more than 4GB RAM. FullHD playback is not as 'efficient' on W7 as in Vista, which personally sucks....
4. If all the above doesn't work, there will be a hardware issue with the Z. Take it in to Sony or take her apart and clean out the dust.
As mentioned by Jparity, there is a chance that the 9300 is overheating due to dust buildup, or something more sinister. Try out the above steps and let us know. -
Will give it a try with the cccp codec pack.. aren't there any other options if that doesn't work ? -

I just, for curiousity's sake, tried out Sharks Codec Pack and that just broke my mkv playback capability. Lost chaptering organization and subs.... SCP also feels and looks extremely bloated to me.
Had to use CCCP's re-register settings to get back to normal. I try and avoid software that ask for donations, and it seems that SCP is one of them. At least I'm back using CCCP again. I guess it comes down to what you use your codecs for. For me, CCCP adds encode support for my mkv packaging hobbies and whatnot, and SCP doesn't meet those requirements.
My previous recommendation stands; try out CCCP (the forum community there looks down on the K-Lite Codec Pack because it seems to cause playback issues. Never tried K-Lite so no idea). I'll probably get flamed and spanked for asking about SCP there (long time member / tester), so I won't bother... -

Ahaha~.
My purpose in mkvs is to produce and encode 1080 videos that have chaptering abilities. Chaptering is a biggie considering I work with 70GB+ worth of stuff at once... It basically lets me seperate out usually large files into smaller ones, like into smaller chunks.
Like when you press fast foward on a DVD or likewise, it goes into the next chapter. mkv formats are capable of chaptering like that and subtitles, and quite a bit more (mkvtoolnix, repacker are good examples).
SCP essentially got rid of the chaptering ability, meaning I can only see one 'chunk' of whatever I'm working on (I need these chunks to be chaptered and seen together to work).
Anyways, my hobby is a wee bit 'different' from your everyday stuff, so I think SCP for usual, short, music videos would be sweet. I just found CCCP extremely light-weight and simple, while at the same time being able to play practically everything in the video section (audio section, we are missing standalone .flac and .ogg support). There are no ads, no bloatware, no donation request, nothing. Plus the CCCP settings menu is alot more organized from what I saw.
I guess I say this because I was kinda involved in CCCP development; but don't fret, I'm always open to new things. But yeah, anything not CCCP is just bad where I'm from ^_^. And trust me, I've practically tried them all, including the iffy ones (which usually involve viruses and OS reinstallations)...
Now, getting back to the OPs original question as to whether there are other options if the CCCP doesn't work. Well, I would suggest you check all your drivers are Sony made and intended. CCCP also comes with a extremely (I can't emphasise extremely here) light media player called MPC (Media Player Classic), which will handle everything without lags that WMP12 experiences. You can install MPC as you are installing CCCP as an option.
I can help you through the codec setup on MPC if it still lags, as it sounds kinda like DXGA codec issue (which is what I have problems with in W7 as well). Vista and XP didn't have built-in codec support like W7 does, one of the few things Vista is good for in my opinion... -
okej, i installed the cccp codec pack, and it works pretty well.. but i see it also uses ffdshow as a filter.. that is the same one as k lite does, i i think that is what created those lags in the first place... isn't CoreAVC a better filter for those things?
-
I haven't been around and checking the changelogs since last year, but I understand that they use updated Haali filters, as well as the ffdshow filters which have been 'certified' compatible for W7. CCCP don't have support for x64 yet since it requires a complete re-write of the installer and, some of the filters that CCCP use just don't come in x64 versions (and not likely since those developers have gone AWAL).
And yeah, I do believe that CoreAVC is slightly better, but then I like keeping my machine with what it has (without adding anything else unneccessary).
You can try the bundled MPC (in the CCCP installer) and see if that will fare better than WMP12. -
