    hi,

i have a sony PCG-FX 150K that has recently stopped reading one of the memory sticks. i've thought about taking it in to get it fixed but then i noticed that (on ebay anyway) replacement motherboards are relatively cheap and that there are more powerful PCG series models which could mean a processor upgrade. the question, of course, is which to buy. i'd appreciate any guidance on this issue, thanks

What do you use the notebook for?

Well, normally I'd say that if you have to replace the motherboard and the notebook is not under warranty, then you need to get a new one. How much is the motherboard? If you could provide the specs of the notebook that would be very helpful.

well, i've done some digging on this and found some stuff out. the motherboard in the notebook now is a MBX-49 1-680-358-11 and it runs a pentium 3, 750 mhz. the alternative (MBX-49 1-680-358-13) is to bump up to a 1.0ghz which maxes out at the same RAM but at least has teh faster processor. i think this is the end of the road as far as upgrades go but i'm not totally sure on that point which is why i was asking.

the cpu is mostly used as a desktop replacement now, mostly websurfing/word processing duties with the occasional into MP3 management and (less common) video editing. it's 5 years old and definitely not under warranty. motherboard is ~$170 new but i'm hoping to buy used.
