    (original user post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/678142-vaio-s-15-sata-msata.html#post8723557)

anyone successfully switched this with a normal sata hdd?

found also this flexcable part that seems to be the replacement
    [IMG]

question remains, where to get it and is there enough space for a normal 9.5mm hdd?

Why do you want to do this? HDDs are much slower. During normal use, the random seek time is the biggest factor where SSDs really shine. You should look to replace the optical drive with an HDD (if this thing has one), or just use an external HDD for the extra space - you get SATA III USB HDDs that are quite cheap for the capacity they offer.

that has nothing to do with the topic.
i am sure there a plenty of other topics where you can talk about your point of view, but please not here.
    thanks.

A regular laptop harddisk (9.5mm) should fit with no problem.

    HOWEVER...
Double-check if your cable has a SATA-end connector. Because Sony often uses their own proprietary SSD with a special cable. In that case, you also will need to order a new cable.

That picture of the cable you provided looks like a IDE-connector... seems bit outdated for current harddisks...

You will need to get a new flex cable which was provided with one of the HDD models and the 2 mounting brackets + screws... you can then unplug the flex cable after removing the 2 screws seen next to the memory module and do a straight swap.. I am sure you could get a good price or trade for your SSD setup in the Vaio S owners thread if you didn't want to hang on to it.

Both 7mm and 9.5mm drives will mount correctly to the brackets.

EDIT: Also keep in mind that the S15 and S13 use a different flex cable so make sure you get the one relevant to you.

See this page for an idea of what the S15 setup looks like

Here is what the setup looks like on my S13.

This appears to be the correct part but i would thoroughly suggest you double checked first.. You would also still need to source the hdd bracket parts.

I'm sure someone with an SVS15 in the main 2012 S series owners thread could have a look and get a part# for you.

Do you currently have a Spinning HDD in it?

If so you can do a direct swap with an SSD with no other parts required just need to reinstall windows + ALL drivers

Unfortunately i've got your same vaio s 13" but my hdd is a 128Gb ssd like the first picture of schmendrik (in the opening of the thread).
So I'm looking for a standard SATA flex cable for vaio s 13" (like yours) and at this point a different caddy.
I think It's impossible to fix an ssd disk like yours in a Sony ssd original caddy, or not?

Probably I've found the solution for Sony sa 13".
I need to buy a new flex cable to convert Sony's proprietary cable to standard sata (cable p/n is A-1921-021-A) and a pair of brackets instead original caddy.
Anyway I haven't understood how Sony ssd raid 0 works. In the official thread of the owners of vaio s series is explained that Sony has realized a raid 0 ssd in a unique ssd. It means that the ssd (128 gb for example) is seen from the system as a 64 + 64 Gb ssd. So what is the difference between a Sony ssd and a "regular" ssd? If I resolve the mechanical question, Could I use a standard sata ssd in raid 0 like original Sony ssd?

    Hi all,

I have a Sony Vaio P13 SVS Laptop that is installed from the factory with a 256 GB SSD (2 X 128 GB), and is connected using Sony's proprietary SSD connecting cable.

I am looking at replacing the stock 256 SSD with an after market 2.5" SATA SSD such as the Samsung Evo Series.

    In order to replace Sony's 256 SSD I will have to purchase a new Flex Cable to connect the new SSD to the Vaio - this cable is Sony Vaio Part No: A1921021A. I have purchased this cable from Laptopbits.co.uk below;

Sony Vaio Hard Drive Cable A1921021A

I also need to mount the new 2.5" SATA SSD into the drive bay by sourcing the correct brackets - does anyone know where I can find / purchase these brackets or the Sony part number for the HDD mounting brackets?

    Thanks.
