have a brand new s series, trying to burn a data dvd, and the drive is being read as a cd drive. tried dragging and dropping files into drive but getting error messages. Anyone else having the same problem or know how to fix this?

You cannot drag and drop a DVD unless it is a DVD-RAM drive which I am pretty sure it is not. Even then you have to format the disc first. You are going to need some burning software. I can't imagine Sony didn't give you some with your notebook.

notebook comes with typical sony bundled burning software. Roxio(ez cd creator) which doesn't even work. I've also read on other forums that the mat****a drive that sony uses isn't compatible with many types of discs. anyone else having this problem?

I haven't had any problems myself, maybe its just the your burning software which isn't fully compatible, have you tried Nero 7?

Panasonics are not very good drives in my opinion. Are you sure it is a Panasonic drive? CDBurnerXP is free and works well for the basic stuff. Not a big fan of Roxio either.
