After installing Windows updates Thursday, Windows 7 HPrem won't boot anymore.

System repair attempts to launch but doesn't work.

I have Sony recovery disks but it freezes on a teal background. Booting a Win 7 install off usb and trying repair system does not work either.

How can I revert my sony to factory settings?

    It's a 2010 VPCS111FM

    Thanks

f10 does work, i get a screen saying

edit windows boot options for: Start vaio recovery centre

    path:\windows\system32\boot\winload.exe

then a long string of code

    /minint rdimageoffset=8192 rdimagelength=3161088 rdpath=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\sources\boot.wim

i hit enter and i get a low res teal screen with "starting vaio recovery please wait"
    nothing ever happens after that

Try remove each ram module if you have 2. Hard drive may be failed too.

i believe this is a pure software problem, harddrive and ram should be fine

i am using ubuntu off a usb to backup my files

if i wipe the computer and install win7, i will lose the recovery partition right? What is the consequence of this? After that can I just use the vaio recovery disks to get it back to factory condition?

If you do a re-partitioning of the harddisk, then the recovery partition will also be deleted.
But you could do a complete new clean install with format (from DVD/USB) to the existing Windows partition. If it comes up nicely, you also still have access to your recovery.

    Anyway...
Even if your current Windows environment is corrupt, you should still be able to enter the recovery mode after BIOS boot. What happens if you keep the "Assist" button pressed ?

This model doesn't have Assist button.
