I recently bought an s580 and love it, except the edges of the screen on both sides are dimmer than the center of the screen. The darker area is about a half an inch wide and then blends into the brightness level of the center of the screen. I recently went to a compusa and the display model had this uneven brightness worse than mine. I am wondering if i should send it back, or do all screens for this model have this problem? Any input from people with good or bad screens would be appreciated.

This seems to be a universal problem of S.

I also have S580 and edges are dim, but it's not a problem. Don't worry, every laptop has the same kind of dimness at the edges. I believe that is the fate of this kind of LCDs :) My old laptop was also like this.

S-series' dirty little secret: the much hyped screen doesn't deliver its promise.

Not a big deal though if you can ignore it. Most people do.

the hyped screen trounces all the other screen at its same class though for eg the fujitsu S6240, toshiba satellite and many others which are too long to list heh
of course it cannot compare to the big meanies like the fujitsu N series, toshiba qosmio, and even its bigger A series sibling

Maybe it's just my S580 but I find that the dim edges brighten when I change my viewing angle from side to side. This doesn't excuse the situation, but it implies the the problem may have to do with the viewing angles of the LCD panel as opposed to its backlighting.

I have a S560 and I do notice the edges are a little bit dimmer, but I can't tell unless I view from an angle. It sucks because my old s460 didn't have that problem.

My S460 just developed the problem but just on the right hand side, i would say its a fault and not just an peculiarity to LCD screens, the screen was one of the main reasons i bought this laptop (Sony's world renound X-brite screen) its pretty crap really my 6 yearold thinkpad is better for watching dvds on-the-go although it lags behind on everything else,
cant wait for Toshiba to bring out a decent small form notebook then i'll try an palm my 460 off on someone that thinks sonys brand name is worth the premium cause the hardware and customers service definatley isnt worth Dit
