Does anyone know if there is a big difference in the screen quality between the carbon fiber models of the sz and the magnesium alloy models?

    Thanks

not a huge difference - they do use different technologies, but looking at the ones in the local store, i certainly didn't notice muc difference

Don't listen to Canonyau. There is a huge difference. Premium szs have LED backlighting and are much brighter.

LED lit screems are brighter, have better viewing angles, and use less battery life

yes, don't listen to me, go down to your local store and check it out for yourself. There's clearly a level of subjectivity here.

IMO the sz non premium screen was fine and I hardly ever use laptops at their full brightness anyway

    No.The Premiums are much brighter.
I was really disappointed by the "normal" SZ-screen.
Maybe you should have turned up the brightness of the premium.
It is really a huge difference.

The only "subjective" factor here is cost.

There is indeed a significant difference between the brightness/clarity/quality of the SZ premium screens compared to the standard screens.

While the standard screen is as good as anyone else's the premium is demonstrably better.

Whether or not it is worth the price difference however is a matter of personal opinion.

No. I had both the sz110 and a 120 and now I own the 160prem. The 160prem is about 3 notches brighter on the brightness bar. If its worth $400-600 more is up to you. You have to read my review. I forgot what the price difference was for me at this point, but I would NEVER buy the 120 after seeing this screen.

yeah the best way to figure it out is to look at both of them without knowing which models they are (if possible). If you can't tell the difference in screens, you don't need the premium (unless you want other features like the carbon fibre).

Saying that, I have the premium and the screen is great quality. Better than the Viewsonic 20.1 inch VX2025WM I have.

hard part is you'll be looking at the screen in bright room light. unless they have it back to back, I doubt if you'll see a big difference. I'm one of those guys that used my screen at 100% brightness. When I got the premium model, I now have it 3bars from max and its fine to use in my office.

Holy Jeez-- I have it at level 4 ... anything brighter is searing pain for my eyes. I wish they had lessened the transition between levels 4 and 5.

Anyway, I spoke about this in another topic--
The screen is noticably thinner. It's powered by LED as opposed to lamps.
Drains less battery. The Carbon metal is very nice also. Sleek and attractive, like expensive metallic wood. Moreover, it's half a pound lighter. Get premium.

    1) Much brightness is good for video and photo editing and vieving. For software developers and text readers it may not be user-friendly. In fact, some people have to turn it down.

    2) If Premium models used different technology, then it may be more expensive to replace with the new LCD in case it is damaged?

I spent a lot of time looking at the two screens before I bought the computer and I've noticed that the colors on the premium version are more accurate. This is based on the available backgrounds on the computer and a side by side comparison. The quality of the two screens is definitely noticable, in respects to both color quality and sharpness

I disagree... the premium screen lacks vivid yellows, and has worse backlight uniformity...
...which makes colors become grayish, specially white, in a big area of the bottom corners.
And don't forget the annoying light bleeding...

Yes, the premium is much brighter, but in color quality, they are really similar (=bad) cause both are TN screens.
(Brightness is not used to measure color quality. As a matter of fact, IPS screens are considered the best in color quality, and they have low contrast ratio and relatively low brightness)

PD: Comparing the two screens in store is not enough. Both screens have a terrible default color settings, specially in the SZ-non premium. After calibration you get much better results.

With regard to the screen quality, my previous one (the FJ model) is even better than SZ premium.
