maybe i'm doing something wrong, but i'm trying to find out how to solve two commen problems with my brandnewsz 160.

    1. the battery rattle problem. someone said stic some felt on the bottom but i'd like to be a little more specific with a 2400 dollar computer.

    2. my fan runs all the time when plugged in. is this normal? do i have a setting wrong (i'm mostly a mac owner so be gentle with me)

The battery feeling loose is normal. The only way to make it better is to add some material to the area where the battery fits into the computer to take up that extra slack that allows it to rattle.Felt is a good soft compliant material, but you could use just about anything that is thin.

You can adjust the properties of how the fan behaves by going into the power properties. rt click on desktop>properties>screensaver>power>vaio power management. In order to change the fan control options, the CPU control has to be set to adaptive. I don't think it is possible to turn the fan off completely, but you can adjust the speed from these options.

    1. See my other post (not sure if that was you asking about the felt in there).

    2. Basically, if the CPU ever runs at 1.83GHz you're probably going to hear the fan on low, and louder if you do work (this includes Adaptive mode, which will switch to 1.83GHz whenever it deems you need it).

Earlier this week I was travelling (at an empty, quiet business class lounge) in "stamina" Maxium Battery mode, which I believe is preset to lock the CPU at ~900MHz and of course doesn't use the 7400 GPU, and I noted that for the first time since I bought the machine the fan was either not on at all or on so low that it was completely inaudible (normally I don't bother with Stamina mode). I believe that another poster has indicated that the magic number is 41 degrees C - above that the fan is on, below that off/inaudible.
