Hi, i jsut updated my win xp to vista (clean install) on my tx850 and have to figure out some things. first of all, installing sony driers etc from the dvd took upwardof 5+ hrs whihc is odd. and eve then i still had to go to sony support to downlaod further stuff before everything was working. is this normal or is this a sign of something wrong and maybe i should reinstall everything.
2-vista plus sony drivers have taken up atleast 20 gigs of space!!! normal?
3-i dont have a wireless switch utility like that in xp. i.e. my hardware switch truns off both wireless and bluetooth and i cant independely turn off either like it was throguh the sony tulity in xp
4-TPM: keeps telling me trusted platform module not initialized. when is tart the infineon security platform inititalization wizard it allows me to rpess enable to enable TPM. but i keep rpessing it and nothing happens. so its still disbaled and says TPM not initialized.
5-I don't have drive allocations for memory stick or sd card. i thought maybe there is no automatic drive until you put the stick in, and i tried that but it doesn't pick up m memory stick. i looksed on the drivers section/os migration and there dont seem to be any drivers available.
it would be great if someone would address these minor but annoying problems i'm coming across.
thanks

1 and 2 are very odd, even if the Sony software claimed space for a restore, it should not be that much. Anything more specific would be helpful to work with.

1. agree w charr, need more info to help out.
2. not normal at all. Vista clean install is a 10gig install and I have never seen a driver or 2 be another 10 gigs.
3. the utility may have only been for xp. try looking for the same utility on a new sony preconfigured vista machines page to see if there is a vista version of the utility. you may have to try a few of them before it works.
4. hit the windows start, in search type in services.msc, if you have uac on click ok or whatever it is. go down to TPM Base Services and check the status and startup type. I have mine set to manual by default. Highlight the service and click Start the service and see if that works. if you are needing this often you may consider right clicking on the service and change the startup to automatic so it will start up when your computer loads the os.
5. sony's driver website should have something for mass storage controller. if you look in the device manager you should see a yellow mark under the minus sign. try using windows to search for the driver and install it and if not the like above your gonna have to look around. you may try to look up the part number on your sony driver page and locate that same part number under a different model number that was preconfigured with vista.
hope this helps -
I can probably help you with #2...it stores your old installation of Windows (in this case XP) into C:\Windows.old\
Just in case you ever need a file in there or something. It will do this even on a clean install. -
ok some more specifics on 1 and 2:
i installed vista by running setup from within xp pro, then choosing clean install. it moved my old windows to windows.old directory, did a fresh install. then once install ws complete (approx 45 mins), i went to dvd, into the sony apps or vaio apps directory and ran the vaio setup.exe file, it then took a very long time to isntall and copy a whole bunch of vaio files.
after installation, i had some wierd incompatible battery error, which i found drivers for online,my hardwrae sound keys werent wroking plus misc other issues, which i proceeded to fix by downloading drivers from the online site.
so now to the space issue:
I have a total 80 gig drive, but with partition etc (sony recovery) the total size is 68.5 gigs. currently i have 42 gigs free! here are the allocaations of my various directories:
program files: 1.53 gig
vaio apps: 1.14 gigs
users: 1.92 gigs
windows: 6.8 gigs:
this is all with hidden file view enabled. i have 2-3 other generic directories with a total of 300 megs.
now thats a total of 11 gigs of space i can identify. i am missing approxiimately 15 gigs of space!!! i cant understand where it might be.
any help? do these space allocations somewhat match the spac eon your frehs isntalls?
oh and while we're at it, another anomoly. i just tried activating my vista (even thoguh i wasnt suppsoed to before reisntalling vista from within vista in roder to upgrade key to be elligible) and it said successfully activated!!
some anomalies with vista
