So i just got a samsung 830 256gb and installed it in my s13 and did a fresh windows 7 install

the first time around i had some trouble with the samsung magician and couldnt get it to optimize. Had boot times around 27 seconds

i redid a clean install in legacy mode, and everything seems to be fine this time around...only thing is that even with some small windows tweaks like disabling the splash screen on startup i cant get it to boot to a completely settled windows any faster than 19 seconds..

while this is a completely respectable boot time, i consistantly see other people posting in the owners thread that they are getting around 10 seconds boot times, so i know that i must be able to get mine much faster

anyone have any advice or help? is it possible that i have a gimpy ssd that needs to be replaced?

Just to rule anything out, have you updated your SSD firmware?

    hey, thanks for the reply

yeah the firmware is up to date

this is the results of the samsung magician benchmark, which (i beleive) is consistent with what i should be expecting considering its running at sata 2 speeds

does the order of installation maybe have something to do with it?

    i did

    1-windows 7
    2-all drivers
    3-samsung software

should i have done the ssd sofware before the drivers? does it even matter?

should i try another clean install in UEFI? would that even make a difference?

so im trying to find in BIOS (press f2) where i can change to AHCI mode, but it seems my options are very limited. besides changing boot order, and enabling legacy mode there arent that many options...should i be looking somewhere else?

    anyone? :p

edit: looks like i was looking in something called InsydeH20 setup utility...so how do i get into normal bios?

going through another reinstal right now in UEFI mode.

fresh after windows completed installing, and before any drivers have been installed, it takes 20 seconds to boot...this seems like it should be much faster

yeah, get another samsung ssd please, they are supposed to max out SATA2 and you dont even touch at the 300mps limit on your tests...

Calm down buddy. You've been going on and on about this for days now. 20 seconds is not bad at all, most ultrabooks get the same boot time according to reviews from engadget. Instead of worrying about saving 5 more seconds each day, enjoy the device. If everything else works perfectly, why'd you be so obsessed with boot time? Still, if you're not happy with the ssd return it and try a new one.

well i only got the ssd yesterday so that seems unlikely.

but anyway, its not the differences in boot time that bothers me. Im just worried that its due to a problem with either my SSD or install process

i mean identical laptops with identical SSDs hould get at least similar performance no?

anyway. im going to leave it at this..for my egos sake i have decided that the majority of users either measured boot times differently than me or simply embelished their boot times :p

I feel your pain! I had an issue with this on my Samsung 830 too. Windows 7 would not even install at first and after that it took an hour to install and my boot times fluctuated from 39 sec to 28 sec. I searched for weeks and found nothing. After reinstalling windows many times from a disk it just seemed to correct itself? My boot time is now 14 seconds from the moment I turn it on to my desktop. I really don’t know how it happen, and wish I could help. I would say don’t give up because it is possible. And yes I was obsessed with maximizing my boot time it’s one of the reasons I bought an SSD in the first place.

    I also heard a solution.Here it is:
    1.reboot the laptop
2.press F2 to enter the BIOS
    3.adjust DVDROM to Disabled
    4.entry into windows 7
    5. standby the laptop
    6.reboot the laptop

Then you got the SATA3 speed.I don't know whether the solution can work or not.

Even though S13/S15 do not run SATA 3 on single SSD, but I am still happy with Rapid Wake feature.
It gets me right into current session within 2 seconds.
It is way more better then hibernation.

hey thanks for the reply. Did it finally get fixed after another re-install, or did boot times just suddenly improve by themselves?

i have noticed by the way that starting in speed mode vs stamina makes a difference. In stamina mode its about 20 seconds till desktop, and then 4-5 seconds more till the mouse settles

on speed mode its about 16 till desktop and 20 till its settles

edit: actually it looks like a fluke. i see no difference between the two now

    cheers

hey thanks for the reply. do you count till the desktop appears, or untill everything settles? (the mouse cursor stops spinning, etc)

This has nothing to do with his bootup speed issue.

    More detail:
For some reason (firmware bug or explicit done by Sony) the drive boots in SATA-2 mode while the chipset and that Samsung SSD supports SATA-3. The SATA-3 mode can be seen when executing the mentioned steps. Most users won't see big difference in normal use. If you executing benchmarks: yes you can see it.

Just double check again just now.
13-14 seconds for the desktop to appear.
25 seconds for everything to settle, coz I have some heavy application at startup (Starwind Virtual SAN, VMware, etc).

I also see no difference starting with stamina or speed. It seemed to fix its self after the second reinstall of windows.
