    hi guys
i just got a new Vaio SA from amazon last week

while extremely happy with the speed and preformance, the thing is really really hot !
i mean if even if i am in balanced power mode it gets so hot you cant actually keep it on your lap... right now i am using it as a desktop while using my old hp dm3 on bed....

its really stupid that all the vents are on the bottom...

anyway my question is how can i Gage the temp ( if there was something physically wrong to get it fixed )
the other thing that i think that they may have designed this for the sheet battery in mind... is there a cover that i can place and divert the heat to the sides ?

please help i am really disappointed here ( problem is that i cant return it since i am abroad for a couple of years... can only visit sony's workshop here)

    regards
    ahmed

those are cool air intake grills (do not block them or the laptop will become very hot), not hot air exhaust vents (which are under the display hinge). close the display and look right under the hinge. to monitor your temperatures, download and run CPUID Hardware Monitor (HWMonitor.exe).

    i am not " blocking "
but with regular usage with them on my lap or any other surface, it becomes very hot

whats the normal tmps i should be expecting ?

my SA idles @ around 50C±3C when on SPEED mode during normal use. on STAMINA, i believe it's @ 40C±3C. when i play Battlefield 3, it goes up to 85C±2C. so if you want lower temperatures, put the switch on STAMINA and select Balanced power mode.

anyhow, download HWMonitor and check your temperatures.

are there any processes running in the background occupying 100% of the CPU cores? that might explain it.

Yeah, it can run hot and loud, but not idled. Check your task manager - "Show processes from all users" and see if something is throttling the computer. Some viruses take over the cpu and make ridiculous heat in doing so. Check if svchost is throttled and get back to us.

I have been experiencing these same issues. Hot Jet Engine syndrome. It would get so toasty that it was painful to have it on my lap when I wore shorts this last summer. I have a thread going elsewhere and it seems like this may be a reoccurring issue with some people here. I think it might be graphics/driver related. . .

just checked... the cpu usage is 20% and ram is 10%
and the fan is spitting heat from hell....

really it cannot be used on lap... i never took those threats seriously but "balls" are in danger with this thing :p

can any one report the heat levels with the extra battery ?

20% CPU usage means one logical CPU core is running at almost 100%. No wonder your laptop heats like crazy. Please go to your task manager, processes tab and sort the processes by their CPU utilization. Tell us what process has the high %age. There must be some crapware doing a lot of stuff.

If you didn't do a clean install, there are some guidelines on which software you can safely uninstall and remove.

Also, just by disabling some startup programs in msconfig will greatly reduce the running processes and should contribute to improving the CPU usage.

That's not even enough. If a HT-enabled computer runs at 50% CPU, that means it's fully utilized and running on full throttle! There must be some stuff going on.

Guys, please post your process list sorted by CPU utilization, without that information we can't help you solving the issue.

Try running without ads. Some sites are filled with flash ads (even when they are showing a static image!!) and badly designed flash stuff can be extremely power consuming.
