    sony laptop wont boot

    can anyone help have a sony vaio laptop when starting up just get black screen with message saying a disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del but just get same message coming up

    Sounds like the hard drive is not working. Can you boot into BIOS and see if you can find any information about S.M.A.R.T. (it is a hard drive diagnostic tool) or about the drive itself? Can you boot into a Vista or XP installation CD and see the hard drive in the setup procedure (don't actually install, just look).

    Also, what is the exact message that is displayed on the screen? Is it about the disk or a partition not being found? Does it mention a specific file or anything else?

    dont know what im looking for in the bios,but when i try to install the recovery cd it goes thru all the precedure then gets to the partition c to install then comes up error occurred 57232 mb disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [mbr] then stops
