I think the sony forum here is very cool, and I was here for about 4/5 months because I was in the midst of getting a vaio. But last week I decided to get a Dell, a brand I always hated, go figure.

But I got sick of Sony's crazy prices, lack of availability and ignored problems, like the battery issues.

So I got a loaded E6400 from Dell's outlet for half the price of an SR. I know they aren't exactly the same thing but I also have a 3 years warranty.

Is anybody out there disappointed by Sony and thinking of steering away?

I don't want to steer away from Sony, but they pretty much force you to. They make some nice products, but then have poor support, overpriced accessories, poor build quality, they just make stupid decisions to shoot themselves in the foot, etc. I won't be buying a Vaio in the near future, but yet the Vaio Z is such a sweet notebook and its screen is incredible. Darn you Sony, you abuse me but make me want to come back. :(

don't get me wrong, every computer will have its technical problems. But it just seems that sony doesn't get it. Even with the PS3 has screwed up a lot of things.

IMO, Dell is a good company to go with, if you're not buying a Sony laptop. Dell's service is top class, based on my experience dealing with them. By the way, congrats on your new laptop. The E6400 is a great laptop IMO. :)

Oh, & remember to get that accidental warranty too. I highly recommend it as Dell are very good at honoring them, when that accidental warranty is needed.

My 60gb's Blu-Ray drive broke only after 2 weeks of usage while playing GTA4. I have googled and looked around the official Playstation Forums and find its a pretty common issue, its like the Xbox 360's Red Ring of Death problem. I hear especially some games like GTA4 and MGS4 somehow damage the Blu-Ray drive.
What is worse is that Sony has not acknowledged this and offered free repairs to out of warranty units like Microsoft now offered repairs to Xbox 360s affected by the RROD and they want you to pay $150 for the repair when it is their own build quality fault. Absolutely ridiculous!!!

Just google "GTA4 broke my PS3" or "MGS4 broke my PS3" and you'll see what I mean.

My early PS2 also had a disc read error problem which affected many units as well. Then, I was lucky to buy from Costco which let me return the unit even after a year of owning it and I got a slim model which was fine until I sold it. Had I not, I would have probably bought the Xbox and sadly missed out on all the great PS2 games that came out. There have been 360 owners so sick of the RROD problem that they gave up and moved to the PS3.

I hear even the first PS1's had poor optical drive quality as well. All three of Sony's consoles have suffered optical problems early in their lifecycles. What a darn shame.

Its really sad to see BOTH the 360 and PS3 have had pretty bad build quality and reliability issues. My Falcon 360 has been working fine so I think Microsoft finally fixed it. I think Sony also fixed it in their new units but then they lack the PS2 backwards compatibility of the previous models. :(
