I've used my sony vaio for 15 months now (needless to say warranty of 1 year is over), you can almost be sure there'll be problems...
One fine day, the computer freezes, hangs, forced it off, then on again... nothing on screen. Later I found out that it was the RAM slot that was damaged, had to do some soldering and it all good again.
A month later, screen starts to flicker and I did some research and conclude that it was the backlight (>US$100). And of course, when I took it to sony, they said they have to change the whole LCD panel (US$1000).
Isn't this ridiculous!!! I've used a DELL, IBM, TOSHIBA, COMPAQ before and I've never had a backlight problem.
One thing's for sure, this is my last sony notebook.

You're just unlucky. Surely, there are bad copies of hardware from every manufacturer and Sony is no exclusion, I'm afraid.

Well I did some research and this seems to be a common problem among HP and Sony notebooks. Sony makes nice products, but they seem to have built-in a set date of failure. and after that, well...good luck.
Anyway, just some (of many -ve) quotes from others...
"Don't buy from this deceptive manufacturer, their service is the worst I have ever had!
I got the same model half year ago, and it is not working anymore! Their products will just last for a little longer than the warranty period.
And, the wosre thing is their *customer service*. I called for help and they didn't try to answer you any question or ask you the details, but ask you to pay 19.99 for even answering some simple questions! In addition, they told me this is what their service should be. DON'T BUY from SONY AGAIN!!
WORST EXPERIENCE ever!"
Interesting one: http://www.ps-consultants.co.uk/commentary/00-08a.htm
Conclusion: Sony specializes in making the cheapest possible products, giving them a snazzy exterior and then overcharging by an outrageous margin.

That's where the Three Year Extended Warranty comes in handy. My other Laptop(PCG-FXA63, gets continuous use) has been running fine for 19 months without a single problem. Still has over a year on the three year warranty. Worth the peace of mind for ANY brand of laptop.

Got my vaio back from the service center and guess what.. 2 dead pixels.. sent it back again and demanded that they change it with no dead pixels.
Why are we not surprised...
sony notebooks are definitely highly overpriced
