I bought a Z13 with 1920*1080
it turned out the max res was 1600*900
called for 4 hours this afternoon, they keep saying that the FHD means 1600*900 native and 1920*1080 at HDMI
what do you think? return?
-
-
return it, many people here have FHD screens in their computers myself included. My P and my UX support 1080P on an external display but that doesn't make them FHD computers.
I don't see why you needed to start another thread when you have one going about the same thing, but then again, I'm not a mod. -
Stop spamming the board with multiple topics about the SAME issue.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/577771-my-fhd-z-not-fhd-only-1600-900-a.html -
any possibility of send it for repair service and have the 1080p installed, or have them send me a part to install?
-
just return it dude..
-
Have you ever dealt with Sony NA? You might as well drive your car over the laptop. If you installed it, then you would void your warranty.
-
no I have never dealt with sony before. I used to buy IBM laptops, they do have excellent services
not sure what sony will do in this case, I am ready to return anyway. if they do not replace the panel for me I'd be better off with my old Z -
do I just call sales and say want to return?
do they pay return shipping as well...also how long does it take to process credit? thanks -
16x9 is better than the 1080 screen.
Easier on the eyes. Keep it. -
I already asked you this before, what is your reasoning?
-
mfpreach, besides easier on the eyes, can you elaborate or explain any further advantages to the 900p screen? I have one on the way, and am afraid I won't like it. I already have one with 1080p screen and find the picture stunning.
As for Sony, they are plain idiots. It's a big company with week support. Just look at the PS3 debacle. They put out products, cutting edge ones at that, but just plain suck at support and service.
I know you don't want to hear this, but return is your only option. -
actually I had the 1600*900 and gives to my wife - I bought this one specifically for the 1920*1080 since the cpu is not as great, only has 128g ssd
besides more expensive
I just feel sony has a bunch of idiots at tech support since they don't really know what FHD is....I dont think they realize Z is their premium line of product -
Just to throw gas on the fire, be prepared for Sonys long refund period. Once they receive it back, it will take them 10 full business days to process the refund. They wait it out the full period of days too.
That is annoying as hell! -
this really annoys me. I just hope they provide better service, besides the Z!
Or I am going with my X61s with 1440*1050 AFFS - still better screen than the Z, but weak performance -
Do Sony Style stores accept returns for items purchased online?
-
Unfortunately, No.
-
Please let us know how it goes. I have butted heads with then with returns in the past and the return period is something they never budge on. You would think they would have some compassion for the situation. But with their refurbs, they are all unique and Sony does not offer exchanges, just full refunds. This also means you have to wait out the timeline in order to order another Z.
Having been in that exact position, I wondered why they didint want to help or my business. It's almost like they are reading from a book and refuse to offer any type of personal touch.
Once Apple produces a 13" worth a damn, I will be buying it. For service, support and repair turn around time. They just can't be beat in that department. -
I will definitely keep you guys posted. This time i am really mad because I went to all the trouble of ordering everything I can to get the system perfect. cost me about 700 with the X18s, 85 with the memory, 30 wiith the screen protector, 40 with the sleeve, and extra battery and A/C
I just called sales again, the girl says she is willing to accept return, but no replacement.
I am yet to hear back from the tech department, they claim that the case is escalated to the 3rd level authority - supposed to be the highest, and they will give me an answer tomorrow - whether a replacement, or a credit for the inferior screen.
I do know that there are replacement for the FHD available on the market, but at the price of around 500 dollars. this means sony need to credit me 500 bucks, which is impossible I know. So I am still fingers crossed that they will replace my screen. I would prefer they send me one since people claim sony depot service is just crappy as hell. The pseudo-techies may just rip your cords apart and leave you a defective unit. -
in this case they do offer me return for refund,
but as mentioned earlier, the refund process is painfully lengthy -
they do have 30 day return period, as this is defective - not as described they are supposed to pay shipping label cost
-
No more Zs for sale on the outlet? Would be much easier to return it and buy another. If you mail it in to change the screen, it may take two months!
-
currently the Zs are all super expensive and low specifications
I will try to get them ship me a FHD panel and send back the wrong one. If they cannot do that I'd have to return for a refund. -
I know you have been following my latest posts. I was trying to give you the idea of digging on the Sony site, looking for the cheapest refurb with the 1080p screen, swapping, then eBay the unneeded one off. if you do it right, you might not lose a dime.
And if Sony thinks your Z is indeed FHD, they would be no issue with warranty service. I would double check your receipt in your email as it will read Display 1920 X 1080p.
I would venture to bet Sony will be asking to give you a 5% credit to keep your current Z. This will help with any costs with the swap.
Just trying to help. -
Thanks Marven,
actuallly even if they offer 200 to me without a replacement of display I cannot do it, just want to try the FHD. Yes on the receipt it says FHD (1920*1080), on the palm rest there is also the 1080p sticker
not sure if they stick it on purpose to deceive whoever receives it
Two reps, spent 5 hours remotely contol my system, reinstalled all the drive, checked multiple places, even my personal email order confirmation with sony, then they come up with the plot, saying FHD meaning HDMI can output FHD, not the display. I am just mad to the very least with their unprofessional service - trying to get away from their mistake.
Anyway I will update on this - also the 2 X18 raid.
It is really fast system, but not a perfect one. I just noticed the 1600*900 panel kind of flashes, and pixels are conspicously obvious. Maybe they just replaced the FHD with a defective display
good luck to all that buys from sony outlet - hopefully no problems for you guys, really ordeal. -
Not only that, I'm willing to bet all my money that the lid will also come back with scratches!
-
true, my friend already experience that before. a sound system was broken by them, multiple scratches, internal cords were broken and misconnected. not sure how sony technicians are selected.
-
Two main reasons.
1080 on a 13" screen strains my eyes. If you are only using it to do light stuff an hour a day it should be fine but for me as I am in law school I have to read a lot on my computer and 16x9 borderline strains my eyes after awhile.
Also increasing the DPI makes it look like crap also.
If this was 15" for sure I would take 1080 but I think it is overkill.
Secondly, if you play games, the 16x9 is better because the gpu can handle most games in native resolution. With the 1080 screen you will have to lower the resolution and it will look crappy.
I haven't really followed the other discussions as there is a difference b/w the two screens in color etc.. but I do not know enough about that to chime in. -
I've upped my 1080 to 125% DPI and it looks fine within the Windows OS itself and the other programs I use.
-
By lowest cost to Sony.
Remember that the company is run by Howard Stringer. In a capitalist world, reputation and pride lose their meanings; all that matters is the bottom line. Who cares whether the company survives ten years? New stock can bought before then! -
Not sure about US law but would seem like pretty straightforward breach of contract by sony in not supplying you the specifications which you contracted for.
If they won't replace with the correct model, sue them for breach of contract and tell them to arrange to pick up the laptop from you, you should be entitled to damages around the value of a replacement screen, wasted time costs and maybe punative damages for sony reps lying to you over the phone. -
Better performance of fullscreen games at native resolution?
-
The 900p screen is known to be brighter as well.
-
Laws of physics. The more dots, the larger the area of the opaque dividers between dots. The backlight has to be increased to compensate, but there's limits to how much you can crank that up.
Of course, technology improves. Hopefully, in a few years we will have gotten rid of the tyranny of pixels, and have high enough resolution that we only use physical measurements. -
update s s
-
Agreed, although sony couldve easily compensated with a couple extra LED's, but both panels are plenty bright in my opinion (especially after the brightness tweak in the registry).
-
Achusaysblessyou eecs geek ftw :D
Agreed.
Also OP, instead of complaining to us (who can't solve your problems) go to Sony. Sony's about to "fix" my laptop next Monday with on-site warranty... I dunno, I can watch the technician as he opens up my laptop and hope he doesn't scratch (although i have a few scratches of my own). I found the process of asking for warranty claim pretty easy. -
Uh oh what happened to your Z achu?
-
do you have a refurb, or a new product?
-
Achusaysblessyou eecs geek ftw :D
Mines was new, purchased 4/20/10. Uhh... nothing, just wanted a new palmrest. I told them my hinges were loose and that my palmrest had an "inordinate" amount of fading. The rep did say that they had ordered parts, just not sure if it's replacement hinges (i'd facepalm then) or if it's replacement palmrest, most likely palmrest. I've been too busy to call in w/ finals and all. -
Cool. I will be eagerly waiting to hear positive comments of your repair/service experience.
Good luck.
-
My palmrest is heavily warn and i also preordered mine before the z11 was released.
I sent my Z in for repair on the screen and they would not repair the palmrest for free, they quoted me $500 or something ridiculous. So i live with it. -
I just received my refurb Z1390 that I ordered last Friday. It also was supposed to have the FHD display but it is just the 1600x900. I am going to keep it though, everything is absolutely mint on it! I may call Sony on Monday and ask for a $100 credit or something for the wrong display.
-
same problem with op
-
I heard someone mention third party warranties, are they reliable (or even third party repair shops)?
-
I wouldn't really trust them
the only brand that does good service for refurbs is lenovo (1 year standard warranty same as the new ones)
Sony really sucks in service, though they have good product (which I mean Z specifically)
maybe buy the new Z for 300-400 bucks more -
Agreed Lenovos and Apples are legendary for their customer service. The SA and the new MacBook Pro is really pushing out of my price range on their own, the Z is just too expensive.
Another one I was thinking about was the Edge E420s, but I've heard people bad mouth the Edge series and the board with the 6630 isn't out in US/Canada yet.
(Sorry for taking it OT) -
u can consider the X220, or X201 perhaps
I case you need, I have several sealed in box X201 for sale at very low price (around 500-700 depend on the specs) -
Thanks but I need a bit more graphical power
The X220 doesn't have an optical drive built-in, it's a necessity for me
, the Protoge R830 is also one, but Toshibas and me just don't mix (bad hardware experience).
-
lovelaptops MY FRIENDS CALL ME JEFF!
Square Trade offers warranties on refurbs, but they are effectively just insurance policies - they will normally not bother to try to repair the item, but will quickly provide a full refund of the purchase price. Doesn't get you your computer back working, but at least gets you your money back to try again. They cost about 20% of the purchase price for a 2 yr wtty on a refurb. No ADP available on refurbs.
sony reps idiots or cheaters?
