I have a s380-- I have been trying to get it to boot from the cd rom to use a utility disk (norton util ghost to another machine connection). I go into bios and set it to boot order optical then hddd but it still only boots to hdd. Caqlled tech support and they say the system will not boot from cd drive (and also that they cannot support the use of any third party software ha ha ha!!!).

I have NEVER seen a computer that won't boot xp from a cd drive?? is there a way to enable this that the morons in tech support don't know or did they disable it. It seems impossible.

I have successfully booted from cd (not the Sony recovery discs) with my s4xp. Might seem obvious, but are you sure the cd you are trying to boot from is bootable?

I can't imagine it won't boot from the CD drive. Have you tried the XP cd?

of course its SUPPOSED to be bootable but might be defective disk. Will try another disk and try this one on another system. However in bios when I set boot order to optical then HDD there is an option (I think shift + 1 or F1) that is supposed to toggle that drive on or off. Hitting this enable or removes an exclamation point. Which is "on" exclamation or no exclamation??

When you boot from CD, many systems make you hit a key during boot to actually start this. I know I had a Dell like that. Are you sure you're not just missing the prompt?

In my bios, there is no exclamation point next to the cd drive and the system can boot from the cd. Therefore, I would say "on/enabled" condition is when there is no exclamation point
